Looking at getting into splicing??

[ QUOTE ]
for a loopie I use the whoopie sling directions from the samson book as a guideline. Instead of making the eye splice at one end, just do another backsplice.

Does this sound alright?

Same here, I've made a couple like that.

If you can make it to Louisville we would love to see you at the Splicing Symposium in March.

I'm defenitly going to try to make it. Hey Ranger, you definently should try to go also. It would definently be cool to be splicing at your age.

Currently loopie slings are a guess to our industry. There is no manufacturer that currently offers splicing directions for a sling and if you call them all, you'll get conflicting answers as to how long the bury should be. As a matter of fact, call the same company a couple times a year and you'll get conflicting answers.

Technically the loopie should have a deeper bury than a bury on the whoopie. Consider this small experiment. For this you'll need a whoopie, a loopie, 2 pullies and helper.

Anchor the adjustable eye of the whoopie to the anchor via an appropriately sized pulley. Have a helper pull with gentle tension the dead eye of the whoopie. While they do that you try to elongate the adjustable eye. You'll immediately see that the because the whoopie pulls from both ends of the bury, even under gentle tension it is near impossible to adjust the size of the eye.

Now set up the same experiment with the loopie. Because the bury is only being constricted by one side of the rope, even with firm tension you can easily adjust the size of the loop with little effort.

You can compensate by burying more for a loopie. How much? I can't give a definitive answer.

It also depends on where you pull on the Loopie, if you pull on either side of the bury, it is quite easy to adjust. If you pull in the middle of the bury it is much more difficult. I did read that samson does recomend that a loopie gets choked in the middle of the bury, probably to guard against accidental adjustment.

Thanks Nick

Well, it been months and for some reason I still haven't tried splicing! I've read some of Dad's books, looked at websites, etc. Right now, I'm looking for a video of some sort. I know this website

briontoss.com

Is a good place to buy a video, and learn the basics. Just to make sure, it would be the splicing video, right. Also, is it worth buying the Magic Wand thing he uses in the vid or not. Thanks
