Today was the day that I got to climb with Mr oldoakman. It was a great experience for me. If I remember correctly, I got to see the 2nd largest willow oak in Ga.
We drove out to Oxbow Meadows Environmental park to do our climbing. When we get there Eric starts pulling a wheel barrow out of the back of his truck. I started wondering if we were going climbing of if he had suckered me into a work project. He started loading his gear into the wheel barrows and then threw my gear on board also. This eased my mind and got me to thinking that this guy has done this before and knows how to make life easy.
We started walking down a bike/hiking trail for a 1/4 mile or so and Eric asked me how about this tree. Me being the tag along rookie, any tree is going to be fine with me. I think Eric said that this tree was a Douglas Oak (a member of the live oak family). (If I am incorrect please correct me.) This was a wild tree that had not been cleaned up. There was a lower limb that had a cotton rope that had grown into the limb maybe 1" in places.
Since I am a rookie and not wanting to do anything stupid, I asked Eric for a suggestion on where to throw my line. He just said up there in that area should do good. So it takes me a couple of throws to get the line in place. During this time Eric is now about 10 feet up in the tree. Now I start fumbling around getting my rope out and tied onto the pullup line. I get the cambium saver on the rope and start pulling everything up and in place. Only one problem. There is a small limb which is forming a tiny V that wont let my cambium saver slide over my tie in point. I discuss this with Eric and tell him that the only thing that I know to do is to pull everything back down and make another throw. I was not liking this idea because Eric was now 30 feet up and if I started throwing the bag again he might end up being a target. Anyway he just says I'll fix it for you. He climbs on up and just places my cambium saver in a great spot. Now that is some great service.
As I finally start to climb Eric is going for a higher tie in point. I take my time getting on up into the canopy and Eric and I are just chatting and he says here take this lanyard and tie off and I will get your line on up higher. I had never tied off with a lanyard and his lanyard had all kinds of things on it that I had not see before. So he put the lanyard in place and then I got clipped in. I untie my rope from my harness and he takes the rope and tosses it on up higher and hands it back to me and I tie on again. I make it on up another 15 feet or so. I think this was the highest tie in point that I had ever used.
While we were hanging around in the tree Eric was taking his saw and really cleaning the tree up for climbing. As we started down Eric was doing some limb walking and cleaning the tree up. Eric said that the tree needed a little more work but it will be much better for the next climb.
I used a foot loop prusik when I climbed and after we got back on the ground Eric says I am going to bring you out of the stone age and into the 21st century. He gets a foot panten and attaches it to my foot and the rope and then he gets his hitch pulley and gets me all tied in. Then he tells me to climb as he tends the rope. After a 3 or 4 steps up the rope, I stop and say that this makes things easier. He shows me how to clip out of the panten and how to pull the friction hitch to get back down. He then said you can have the panten. I don't hear all that good so I took the hitch pulley in my hand and said this. He said no, I use that all the time when I climb. So now I realize that he is talking about the foot panten. This gift was the icing on the cake. I really like new toys but the toys are so much more special when they come with memories of a great climb.
When we got back to the car Eric tells my wife that he has given me something to practice with and a shopping list for a hitch pulley.
It was just a great day with a light breeze, 65 degrees, sunny, and no bugs. It just does not get any better.
So Eric really made an old rookies day.
