Locate a "survivor" American elm

Re: Locate a \"survivor\" American elm

That is almost shocking given they attribute a 95% plus resistance rating on them. Do you have any data or links involving these or other finds? What lab or extension service did you use? They are being used heavily all over the country... Thanks

Re: Locate a \"survivor\" American elm

Here is a picture of a Valley Forge elm in its third year I planted next to my car behind my house in the street lawn I took this morning. These are great trees I have not found any in our area to have structural problems or DED.

I am still challenging the OP to give some data on their unreliability as part of the topic of this thread. Info I can go to my town as a board member and discontinue planting. Thanks.

Anybody, as to what possibly is the "central leader" of am American Elm is?

We have a couple of beauties in the park up the block from me.

Re: Locate a \"survivor\" American elm

I just got to climb such a beast in Ohio today. It was a magnificent elm. Unfortunately I was removing a large broken limb. Gorgeous v-shape.

Shocking is what we said. There are 3 more close by with no symptoms. I dont know of any other data on our trees. We use PennState co-op ext. They have quite a collection of elms up at main campus but they are managed intensively. A large problem they have been having in the last few years is elm yellows.

Central leader? Kinda contradictive to A. Elm. We have not had any problems with VForge and have planted many. I will register them when I have time tho.

My advice would be to go for untreated large diameter street lawn A. elms. We have a number of them and you know they have had some exposure to DED and fought it off under the most adverse conditions possible. Very very tough trees IMO.

Well, 'central leader' more so being the largest of the structural branches.

Re: Locate a \"survivor\" American elm

I had thought you might comment on this a little further. Wonder if you could cite the researcher or research as I am on my town's UFB and we have planted many VF elms and plan to continue and what feed back we have had from them is mostly positive outside of "wild" growth mentioned in this article. It is also negated in this article.

I talked to Jim Slavicek (http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/people/jslavicek). He's the project leader for the Survivor Elm project. You can also get to his information if you follow the links from the Survivor Elm website (http://nrs.fs.fed.us/disturbance/invasive_species/ded/survivor_elms/)

I hope that helps.

There are quite a few peer reviewed publications that cover DED-resistance testing. Here are a few:

E.B. Smalley and R.P. Guries. 1993. Breeding Elms for Resistance to Dutch elm disease. Annual Review of Phytopathology. 31: 325-52.

A.M. Townsend, S.E. Bentz. and L.W. Douglass. 2005. Evaluation of 19 American elm clones for tolerance to Dutch elm disease. Journal of Environmental Horticulture. 23(1):21-24.

E.B. Smalley. 1963. Seasonal fluctuations in susceptibility of young elm seedlings to Dutch elm disease. Phytopathology. 53:846-853.

A. Santini, A. Fagnani, F. Ferrini, L. Mittempergher, M. Brunetti, A. Crivellaro, and N. Macchioni. 2004. Elm breeding for DED resistance, the Italian clones and their wood properties. InvestAgrar: Sist recur For. 13(1)179-84.

That should be enough to get you started.

Call Jim Slavicek and ask him. I was quoting him.

Re: Locate a \"survivor\" American elm

Days before I saw this thread one of the elms in the park I spoke of lost a big limb. Not one of the biggest but I'd say at least 12"s. Came down in winds from a thunderstorm. They cleaned it up and left the rest of the tree, so I'm assuming it's healthy.
