Live Bottom Chip Trucks

Yes, an innovative tree company could store chips in their yard, then charge the HWY depts to broadcast those chips off their roadways for weed abatement using such a truck.

I doubt that chips from a tow behind chipper would work for mulch blowing. The auger feed and blower system need a uniform chip. Unless the chips were screened or tub ground there'll be sticks and chunks in the mix. This will clog the blower or auger.

Think of what you're asking. In any hydraulic system the fluid needs to be uniform or the flow/pump won't work. Chunks, sticks and heavy pieces won't pump/blow. They'll settle or coagulate in the air stream.

I don't know Tom?

I can picture this New Holland auger fed blower mounted in front of a chip box with a PTO drive system blowin a heckuva lotta chips pretty dang quick!

now THAT is a good idea.....

EASY to build out of currently available tech.

In fact, you could even run the power straight off the trailer plug so that you could move from truck to truck in needed.

Next, plug the moniter into the cig lighter and suction cup it to the window.

Cmon with it!

Lastly, the camera could be attached with a strong magnet. (would need to be tucked under truck to avoid chips.)

This is a really good idea because really all that is required is assembling the parts and simply repackaging and remarketing them back to us.

Simple and easy....

I do not think this would work well with a typical forestry boom as the trucks, at least the ones I have seen, are not able to carry any extra load. By the time you add all the climbing and rigging gear and with 3/4''s of the chip bed full you tend to be pushing the max weight for the truck, so it would be difficult to add anything that would increase the weight of the truck. That is what we have run into with the rigs we have on the ground. I imagine you could spec for a truck that can haul the weight and have proper brakes if you really wanted to add something to a forestry boom.

I don't know for sure, but I think they would dump fast. Read below to see why I think so. But, I could be proven wrong.

For what it is worth... There are lots of videos on Youtube to show the rate at which 52' trailers can unload. They are fast.

I bet it would be easy to see the rate of 6 inches per second. That would take most chip truck beds about 20-30 seconds to dump.

With a hydraulic gate that can open in about 3-5 seconds...

Let's be fair and say the whole process should take 1 minute.

We can't beat it.

A friend has had a backup cam on his chip truck for the last year. It is pretty useful, though I can get distracted watching the chipper bounce along in the monitor. There is something sort of funny about it.

Live floors would be cool but the ability to side dump like some Unimogs would save me a half hour or more everyday.

I like the idea of dumping on the go too. However, I see more benefits to the live bottom dump feature.

I don't do many deliveries to customers, however, when I do, they never seem to be the easiest of places to back into and dump. People always say, "Oh yeah. You can back in here. Our septic guy does all the time..." Little do they know that the bed of the truck needs to stand about 16' in the air. They never account for overhead clearance.

I also hate dumping mulch when on a slope of any kind. I'm worried of tiping over sideways.

I see a future for live bottom chip trucks. Southco needs to read this thread!
