Linemen\'s Competition

I was driving past a local convention center and saw lots of utility poles and people, some type of competition. It peaked my intrest so I pull in to check it out. It was the state Lineman Roedo. There were a number of events simulating work senarios inclunding rescue and transformer replacement. I thought some might be interested so here's a few pic's

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

Cool pics, post away!

I wonder why that lineman in the first shot wasn't using his buckstrap?

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

That rescue scares me! The way they lower off of the edge of the cross arm. And to think that many poles in the world are so old and all??

Also, the guy on the right is climbing with no strap at all- cowboy style.

I wonder how many gaff outs they have in the comp?

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

MB; Like Mark said the guy is free climbing and just getting up there so he hasn't safetied in yet.
The other method Mark is to drive a screwdriver into the pole and belay the victim with a wrap on the pole and over the screwdriver.
We are using fall arrest up here now, no more free climbing.
I free climbed for over thirty years and came down twice, once on an iced pole and the second on a hazard pole.

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

No splinters but that was an option.
I free fell to the bottom with both hands just lightly touching the sides of the pole.
It took just a little over a second so I had lots of time to think about what I wanted to do... I didn't want slivers for a year.
I was falling but nothing was hurting yet so I decided I didn't want to change that and then I piled up on the ground.

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

None of the guys used a strap on the way up. I was asking one of the judges about it. He said that's the way its done because it's faster. I asked about saftey regs regarding that and he said there were none. He also said some guy fell this morning and broke both legs.

The rescue dummies had some rough rides, there was one that had his head and one are ripped off.

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

NEVER climb a pole/tree w/o a lanyard, I don't care what anyone says. Who needs TWO accident casualities???

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

It's got to be faster/easier/safer to set the lanyard on the ground and climb that way (assuming a slick/bare pole anyway)!

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

I understand it's not for fall-arrest, but am merely imagining what must precariously take place to first set it when at the top of the pole!

A pole strap won't arrest a fall it's only for work positioning.

Again I say "Lordy!"

Re: Linemen\'s Competition

I used to free climb, back in the day[about 20 some years ago].It was rather stupid of me,perhaps a macho thing. You can actually "hitch hike" a pole about as fast as free climbing.
I only cut out once, which is more than enough. No splinders but creosote burns that left both arms raw for weeks, ugh.
The boss went to Tombs Inc,In Massillon Ohio the next week and bought a Hi-Ranger because he figured if not he would kill all his journeymen.Oh goody,I'm a lot better flyer than I am a climber.
