Some people get lucky; I once ran a tree and landscaping service, wasn't making huge money, but had enough $500 plus net days in one of the more expensive parts of the US. But I got out in the early 2000s, was politically disgusted by Iraq war and didn't know how to hire legal workers as many other contractors were and continue to hire illegals or foreign workers.
Though I would agree with some of Levi's concerns ala Ralph Nader/Howard Zinn; the problem was people did not fight back legally as they should have through their politicians. I'm spending a lot of time filing complaints over unethical or just plain lazy business owners with the state's consumer affairs. The US has huge resources; are they being well and equitably used? Not very often. I would like to see many times more sustainable and organic farms throughout the US; and I have worked on dozens of farms, both organic and commercial. Big difference.
The Pilgrims came here to escape crappy environs in Europe, poor quality water, overcrowding, and numerous social problems. There are smart cutting edge solutions to all these things, but we have to work within the system for that.
