I have been with Home Advisor, formerly Service Magic for 3 years. They have great customer service and provide quality leads. First off ask for them to waive the $100 set up fee.
You can't sign up and expect it to just work for you. You have to spend time building a profile and ratings. The leads are highly competitive and will give you a rating on your service. When someone requests an estimate for work, Homeadvisor will send the lead to you and 2 competitors unless the customer reads your profile and requests only you.
Treat the leads like you are trying to break into a new market. Be the first to call the customer back, the first to quote the work, do a quality job at a competitive price, and the system will work for you.
Homeadvisor will want to increase your zip code range and the services that you offer. Don't do that at first. Only take leads you can respond to the same or next day. Only take jobs you can get scored a 5 on. Ratings are everything, don't risk a bad rating trying out a new service. Here is my rating distribution:
Rating 4.85
Distribution
5 Stars 31
4 Stars 2
3 Stars 1
2 Stars 0
1 Star 0
The one 3 was for a service I had never tried before and the customer happened to be a professor that asked more questions than I could answer. Lesson, stick to what you are good at, and be the best!
Winter is a great time to work on your profile. You only pay for the leads they send you, $15 to $30. If you can win the leads and get good ratings it will be worth the effort.
Don't expect to be flooded with work, at first I only got 1 to 2 leads a month. Now it is only 3 to 4, but it was more leads than I received from my website and with a lot less effort. Hope this helps!
