Lanyard snap preferences

It's time for a new lanyard

Having a non-swivel snap has always been my preference. There are times when it's nice to push the snap end around. Swivels add flop so I've stayed away from them

There have been rope snaps built that were notorious for having a pinch point in the safety mechanisms. Get my glove or skin nipped is not an option

What snaps work best for you?

I'll have a tight eye sewn on the other end for those occasions that I need a DEDA. Then I'll use a biner not a snap

My preferred rope for years has been 7/16" KMIII. Besides performing well I had long lengths to use up. The supply is gone so it's time to update...maybe

Any other suggestions are welcome

Thanks

I really like kernmaster for a lanyard rope. It is very similar to the KMIII in hand. About the snap, I like a double action steel snap for tossing around a target. Lately I have been using RockOs for my lanyard and I want to switch out to a RockO with the ORCA lock. I think the ORCA is the ticket for a lanyard.

As far as an all around connector, I really like the DMM shadow or the klettersteig with the ANSI locksafe gate. That 16kn gate is really burly and easy to operate, even in gloves. I don't know who sells them. I wish I could direct you to a retailer but I got mine on ebay. I don't know how but I got 8 new DMM biners with the 16kn rated gates for 25 dollars. Maybe wesspur or treestuff might start to carry them if we ask for them.

Although it has seen limited use, I recently switched to 12mm Sirius bull rope for my lanyard with an ART positiner 2. I'm really liking that combination. I also have a fairly generic double action snap (non swivel). I spliced the tail end with a carabiner for a DEDA option, and leave the carabiner attached to my harness when not in use, to prevent accidental self tailing of the positioned. 20180208_085616.webp

I've been using the ISC Swivel triple action. I have never thought it seemed too "floppy" or twisted when I didn't want it to... With an ART Positioner with a swivel on that too...

My preference is either the ISC triple action snap or petzl’s ball lock am’d (I think that’s the name). Both are easy to manipulate however they’re oriented and do not require awkward actions. The isc snap’s locking mechanism can get bent and affect the gate closure operation. The Petzl ball lock may not always pop back out and lock after being covered in saw dust when blocking down a spar. I’m accustomed to checking them both, so it’s not a big deal to me, but should be mentioned.

I switched to Sterling tri-tech three years ago for lanyards. I won’t go back. The stuff is a nice cross between supple and stout, leaning toward the stout. It lasts forever and works well on any number of hitch/ hitch cord combos.

No opinion on snaps. Just don’t use ‘em.

ISC snaps have always been my favorite. Never had a pinch and both hands can work them open in any position. The gate clearance is nice and big so you never miss.
I like the double action for simplicity/durability, but the triple action is really slick too.

Just cut the ISC 3 action swivel snap off my new lanyard to use it somewhere else. I really don't find the swivel useful at the end of my lanyard because , well the rope twists just fine.
I do prefer the snap because it is easier to use with one hand. The captive eye is also important to keep it oriented. It's a little heavier so I can toss it around and bring it down better, I'm going to try a steel (unless it's stainless) one so that it can function with my magnets as well. They do have to be spliced on so that can be kind of a pain unless you can sew them on or order the cordage with one attached.

I used the ISC snaps but had poor experience with them twice. Both times the spring in the snap failed allowing the gate to flop around. Not sure what I did that caused this twice. Never had a problem with the cheaper bright colored aluminum snaps but the nose doesnt fit into things tje same way, like s hitch climber hole or becket on a pinto, or thimble prussic

I hate the isc snaps. I have a tri lock one if anyone wants it’s make me a offer. I think I used it twice for very short climbs. To me it was a waist of $ as those things are not cheap! Or trade for a old school in same condition? I’d be interested in a spreader for a close haul bridge on my TM?

All this snap talk reminded me of the one on the bottom of the climbing bucket I keep wanting to throw down a bluff, only to remember how much I paid for it (back in the tub it goes )
