Kretzschmaria duesta / brittle cinder fungus

I'm definitely not worried about the dead ash. It was laying on the ground for 3 years before i stood it up and started using it, so there's probably several things living in / on it. I thought it was an interesting photo to include. I haven't seen any of the grey/white fruiting bodies on it so i couldn't rule out any of those species. Comparing to google photos it looks a bit more like the Biscogniauxia or k. deusta than the hypoxolon to me because it's more of a single raised mass and the hypoxolon seems to be growing more in the form of multiple distinct (though tightly packed) lumps

I've already looked into this as far as I am able, but would love to hear any thoughts. This looks like Kretzschmaria to me, but I'm not yet qualified to call it on my own. I forwarded it to a lab. I'm noticing that this one spans more living tissue than the OP. Anyone have any thoughts about how soon the tree would fail? It's got substantial lean on the side opposite the fungus.

So this was ID'ed as Kreutzschmaria shortly after my original post. I emailed the tree manager at my son's school and let them know that the likelihood of failure was high and that there was a moderate occupancy rate of high value targets with varying protection factors, so they should not allow traffic through there until it was removed. I received an email back saying that they were on top of it.

Yesterday it fell and hit a car with a person in it. The person is okay. I would say they were distinctly underneath it rather than on top of it... :/

Glad there were no casualties, aside from the tree. There's a world of difference between the fungal spread in your pic and the codit in the OP. Really disappointed in UMass' cya recommendation.

Hello all, hope you are doing well.

I've been *dilligently working on this post for you all for the past 4 years, although i know i have been fairly quiet otherwise.

I try to apply the Tenet WP Biofungicide monthly during the summer growing season april / may / june / july / august. I also have done some applications of this producers other products nitrix and armor (at their reccomendation) though not nearly as frequently. I am doing soil soaking from a watering can, nothing fancy. I have occasionally applied a bit of directly on the area the fungi is growing and the nearby bark.

I thought i took photos every year but at the very least could not find the ones from 2023. I did a bit of extra work that year by creating some incisions in the fruiting body and applying neem oil immediately. No idea if it helped but the fruiting bodies disappeared quickly after doing that.

There seems to be a carpenter ant presence in the heartwood as well.

The tree is looking very healthy to me in general. I have not had another arborist visit since then but am starting to think i need some help pruning so i may have to call someone soon. There is a neighboring maple tree that also seems to be looking very healthy and green in this particular area of my yard.

If there are any questions let me know!
