Knuckle boom

How do you guys calculate distance to your pic? I have a laser rangefinder but it works like crap. It’s hard to tell what I’m on. Am I on a limb am I on the trunk am I on some other tree? I can’t freaking tell. Of course I have a trustee ol measuring wheel. But sometimes it’s over a house in through the woods we go and I cannot calculate the distance with the wheel. Any input would be appreciated

I pace it out and guess the height. been at it for a few years. There more that I didn’t think I could get but did than I thought I could but couldn’t. Actually that hasn’t happened yet. I try to be really conservative so it’s not a bad decision when I tell the client I can do it. You just get used to your boom and load chart

I respect your presence in the industry Steve. There has to be better way though. I quote almost none of my jobs myself. I need a scaleable process. Any help is appreciated.

Gotcha. At first I felt like I let the customer down but after they worked with me a bunch and put me on jobs that my machine wasn’t the best option for I stopped taking it personally. It’s the primary contractors job to get the rite tools there. Took me a while to feel that way but your situation is different because they are your jobs. Make sure your salesman comes out to a few jobs and give tons of feedback on the bids. I looked at a high end inclinometer/range finder. What I wanted it to do was about $1k so I bagged the idea. The electronics are out there though. Lots of good stuff on the market though if you’re willing to invest the cash in it to prevent bad estimates

I use a laser range finder and it works well. I also use a measuring wheel or pace out the radius them estimate the height.

Yep, a hypsometer is what you want.

This is what I have, it’s ~$90 cheaper now too!

Welcome to TreeBuzz Hawk. If you type @CanaryBoss he will get an alert email that someone spoke of him - or is requesting his attention etc. Otherwise sometimes a person might not pick up on that you are asking him something. ( He last posted on this thread April 22, 2019.)

I know he posted somewhere far more recently as I saw pictures of his crane and some other small tracked cranes he bought. Can't find them though - sorry.
