ISC ascenders sweeet

On my first tour of the ISC factory most of the production run was involved in the handled ascenders. Denny took me from the start where long aluminum extrusions shaped sorta like a rectangular box with the middle of one side gone were cut into lengths. Those blanks, eight at a time, were but into a milling machine and shaped into the shells. All automated. There were several more processes. The last was putting the finger grip handles on with rivets. then...to packaging and shipping. I wish that I had taken more pictures.

Care to elaborate on that Rich?

It would be easier to show you.....any chance you are heading through Louisville any time soon? Maybe we can meet up in Cinci?

The first thing you will notice, and one of the aspects I like the best, is the beefiness of the frame for the ISC Ultrasafe. (and their Pro Ascender as well) The thicker frame allows for better attachment options but more importantly the general abuse we tend to give our gear (moving up and over limbs, through branches, and running directly alongside a trunk) is handled FAR better with this beefier design. This is pretty important as more and more climbers leave their doubled rope systems in their gear bags and make the full switch to SRT work positioning with their Rope Wrenches...

The teeth on the cam are not the sharp angled teeth that you are used to seeing with other ascenders....these are more "coned" to prevent damage to your rope yet allowing excellent grip on the line. The retention pin that locks the cam in place allows you to lift the cam a little for moving the ascender down the rope but does not allow the rope to come out of the throat of the camming device. This virtually eliminates the potential for rollout..

There are plenty more things that I love about this ascender, but like I said, it would be much easier to show you rather than write about it....

ISC jumar is serious gear, but for me so much big, complicated and "clumsy". I prefer light, simplery and perfect working PETZL. I thing, for tree climbing Petzl jumar is better. I verry like ISC desing - for example pulleys, binners etc. but this jumar is not for me.

Cheers!

How many of you guys who own the ISC Ascender always use the little retention pin that helps to keep the ascender on the line better?

It works great, but the little ball lock on it makes it a real PITA to put in and out when removing or installing it on the line, or am I missing something?
