Is this safe to use...

Need some advice. I bought a couple of Ultra Tech eye&eye cords a while back. I recently opened up one, and it looked like the attached image. It doesn't have any covering over the underlying fibers. Would they be safe to use, or should I return them?

Thanks,
Jim

That's the way they are supposed to look, though the eye on the right looks a little funky.

That'll be one of the splices we go over in the latter part of the class!

Thanks, Nick. What made me wonder was that the cord I got from another arborist site has the covering over the eye. That doesn't compromise anything in strength?

Actually, the eye on the right I can't get a carabiner through, so that cord will have to go back. The second cord I can force a carabiner through.

I'm looking forward to your class. See you in a couple of weeks.

We'll go over all this in the class, but in that rope, practiacally all the strength is in the core alone. The cover is just to protect is from dirt, sun, and dumbness. It is okay to use it core-only. It's better to use it with the eye covered as well.

Nick,

Why is it that the splycers don't leave the mantle over the eye and make it a clean covered eye that the sun can't deteriorate.

This one (a footlock prussic) is (in my opinion) done in a much cleaner way. The mantle is tucked away under the (don't know the English word)takeling.

Wolter- in some ropes, it is very difficult and maybe impossible to get the cover back INSIDE the rope. It is a rare occasion when I will leave the core exposed, but every now and then I have to. In a rope (such as ultratech) the cover doesn't NEED to be involved. There are easy ways to keep the eye covered, but NOT tuck the cover inside, too.

And in english, the takeling is the "core" (like spanish Corazon, for "heart").

It is possible to make one exactly like your picture where the cover DOES go around the eye part, then is stitched down (like the red/yellow whipping that you have in your picture). Maybe that is what was done in the picture you showed?

Nick, I am happy that you explained it and in your explanation you gave me the answer.

Takeling is not the core but the whipping (in this case red and yellow, and yes that's wat is done. The splicer tucked it nicely under the whipping.
This way the core is shielded from UV.

Great explanation, Nick. Would that be the same technique you would use for making an eye splice in HRC, or can the cover be easily enough brought back inside the rope?

Thanks,
Jim

John one coment on that one.

In the TCC rules there is a line about the primary fallprotection/climbing system (2.2.9). This states that the biners used for your primary system must be a tripple locking.

The snaps you show are NOT tripple action and are only to be used as a positioning lanyard or on a overhead cable out of reach in a fall protection system.

There are three places (in my opinion) that can get you a disqualification.

1 getting of the footlockline in the workclimb. This is not in the clocked competition but before. Repositioning means using the flipline at that moment as your primary system.
Using it during the timed workclimb event is in my opinion not prohibited because you are at all times during that event secured in the top of the tree with a primary system.

2 Probably doing your thing at the Aerial Rescue (see first part workclimb).

3 In the Masters' Challenge you are free to use what ever you like if only the equipment is up to the industrial standard. Once more, on a flipline those snaps are for positioning and not primary use.

Have a safe competition an lots of fun.

I have been climbing on that same eye & eye ultra tech cord. The eyes were very tight and dificult to put on the caribiner at first. Now that it is broken in it slips on easily. I like it a lot and think I will order a couple more.
