Threaten the rope with a beating from a rubber mallet along with cussing, also helps. It does wonders for anger management too.

Aw, heck, what d'ya expect after something's been knotted
and done some real work? I'll wager it's dandy, or as good
as was, not necessary good as new. Did you try rolling it
under foot, to help restore Spyder-pleasing roundness?

Damaging inner fibres w/o noticeable effect on the outer
sheath is hard w/o some big load (and maybe not so well
balanced contribution of sheath & core); someone tried this
(Penberthy) w/climbing rope, a long time back.
