Internship in Thailand

Location
Minnesota
I am currently applying for an internship at a botanical garden in Thailand. It is at the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in the northern mountains of Thailand. So it is quite far away from where the Tsunami hit. I would be working with any projects that are currently going on at the garden. If I am accepted I will be there for 1 or 2 months, depending on how long I want to stay.

I was wondering if anyone has ever been to Thailand and has any advice for me. Or even if you havent been there any advice would help.

Be vigilant about your anti-malerial pills, if you are going to be there a LONG time DO drink the water, just eat alot of yogurt while your doing that. Learn as much as the language as you can, and try to use it, people tend to like it when you try, they are nicer and will be more accomidating, you will need your visa, if you leave the country make sure they stamp it on the way out and in.
Thats some general stuff to think about.

Oh yeah dont wear any metalic jewelery.

Amen on this one. I spent 2 years in Japan. Evin if you don't Know how to say it try, the people will recognise the effort. Also don't memorise questions like /forum/images/graemlins/aaa.gif"where's the bathroom?", withought memorising a few answers to the question. The answer is often difficult to translate for a newbie. /forum/images/graemlins/bigeyes.gif
Most of all have fun, and it will be.

Before drinking the water, get yourself some tablets called Disento. They are available over the counter in most pharmacies. Keep a bunch of them with you at all times. At some point you will need them!

Also, be very vigilant. Thai people are the friendliest people you'll meet, its in there nature to help, but also, like anywhere, there are those that will use their friendlyness to exploit you. Special offers, usually aren't!

Remember Ice is made from tap water. 1 cube can make you sick. Stick with bottled. /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Some notes on water, if your there for a long time, bite the bullet its going to happen sooner or later, if you decide not too, there are some certain things that will get you:
Ice( as noted)
Brushing your teeth
fresh vegetables and some fruit
drinking water (thats obvious)
showers you will accidently injest it.

Sounds just like America!

Just travel, listen, look, and expand your mind. Stay safe and enjoy.

if you buy yourself a wife whilst you're out there make sure you get her checked out thoroughly at the nearest clinic first
