Hello all. Non arborist question.....What causes that?? Just two trees growing to close together? Will the larger tree eventually strangle out the smaller one?

yes it is just two different trees growing too close. It may be russian roulette as to which one will die first, or they may just live happily ever after, but this is competition at its finest!

Here's one from a clients yard, three stems: western redcedar, grand fir, western redcedar. They all blew down in high winds three years ago.

I wonder if I am right or way off in that in growing that close together if the roots graft together to support, and feed . Hmmm have to find a small clump and dig up and see.Cool to see these things though thanks for the pics and sharing.
