Installation of Support System

I installed a support system 2/3 up in a live oak that is 40ft. It is a co-dominant stem that splits 4ft from the root flare, the DBH of each stem is 20". I wood not be able to get the holes parallel to install a brace at the main split in the tree, so I was thinking about putting another support cable on the lower 3rd of the two main stems. What do you think??? Using 3/8 EHS with guy stops.

I did some hybrid installations like you're envisioning.

Dynamic cable high in the canopy.

Steel cable w/lags or through bolts above the union which become flexible bracing.

Through bolts/rods in the trunk to support the split in the Y.

Take pics of course so you can track your success!

The reason I ask about installing a lower support cable is to (of course) add more support but also to give the home owner piece of mind they can see. After installing the support, I left to get on the next job without billing them. I was going to get back and assess it within a week or so and bill them. She just text me and said they are going to have someone else do it because I haven't installed it, so I called her telling her the cable is there. She said "but we can't see it". I told her "your not looking high enough". So I am heading over in morning to show her.

The client response is a sign you did a good job. I like to use the ANSI A-300 and BMP's to sell that type of work. I did one job where I hung 165 feet of cable in a Norway Maple. It was a spoke and wheel installation and I left one thimble hanging on the rigging ring that would tinkle in the wind like a wind chime. A new owner purchased the home and could never figure where the sound was cominng from until I pointed it out. He was amazed at the job I had done.

Adding one for visiblity? Why not just take pictures of what you put in while you are up there?

O and why can't you line up holes to install a brace rod? Buy or rent a bigger drill bit maybe?

3/8" EHS can work as a brace, but it does not stop twisting like a rod would. Lags are not to be used in wood >10", so don't copy Dunloop on that one. Wirestops work well.

Always. Always, flag your cable installs and you will not have to go back to show the customer.
