In search of a thinner throwline…

I've been using almost the same fishing as njotis, the fluoro green nonfading looks to be the same one I've been using, though a different sticker on the spool. It's about as thin as I would want to go for a throwline. 1mm diameter seems like a good middle point between the regular throwlines and the thinner "normal" fishing braids. I feel that a lot of the thinner fishing lines would dig into the wood, talk about getting stuck.

I just did my fly reel set up a week ago. So far I’m really happy with it. Will be testing it out more today and will eventually get a lighter throw weight for it. The fly reel was only like $13 on Amazon. The drag isn’t adjustable but you can turn it off which I never do. The drag is just right for sending the bag but never having the line run out. My line is the notch dyneema 1.75mm. Currently have around 40-50ft (bag got stuck in a tree and when I cut the line it went in the fly reel ) but there is a considerable amount of space in the reel. Could probably get 75ft without an issue.
BTW, I have no fishing experience and only in my second year of climbing but I’m in love with it and here is the link the the fly reel:

Hey Aerial Traveler and Tr33Fr3ak757:

When you throw your bag using the reel, do you first unspool some line, or just let it fly from the reel? I would think the latter would result in some birdnesting.

I’ll pull just an arms length so that I have a little to throw. The drag on the reel doesn’t allow any line to run out. I can let 20ft of line hang between my legs in the tree if have the bag in my hand and it doesn’t run out at all. Here is a google drive shared link showing how my specific reel works. I know most fly wheels have adjustable drag. Mine doesn’t but it seems to be the right amount of preset drag.

Hey Timberdonkey,

Thank you for the inquiry...and sorry for not following up as was requested.

  • The reel I purchased is awesome in terms of self-retrieval (spring loaded).
  • The reel is a bit heavy. When I look at Flushcut's photo above, it seems lighter...but maybe not.
  • The reel can hold way more line than I would ever need within the canopy. That being said, I just might be able to leave the throw cube in the bag sometimes if I just want to get going from some lower limbs.
  • The last thought tells me that I could afford a bit thicker line if I can find it.
  • The application of the line through the canopy worked great. However, I did get caught on a limb, and the extraction became the goal of the climb. My climbing mentor told me that's what happens sometimes...so enjoy the process of retrieving your gear. It's all recreational climbing...the only difference now is you have a genuine purpose...get your gear back!
  • I'm still curious about braid line from the fishing store. I know that comes in all sorts of thicknesses, and they'll sell whatever quantity you want off the large spools.
How's that?
Look at the braided line used for crossbow fishing for big catfish. This class of line is typically used with crossbows for line setting in big PNW old-growth. Two-stage process. Pull up a regular throwline with the skinny braided stuff then pull up the climbing line.

I flake 50' of ZingIt throwline into a small pouch which I hang on my harness. It's very quick to put away, flake "bundles" into your hand then stuff each flaked bundle into the pouch, one on top of the other, doesn't tangle.

Problem with super skinny throwlines is they tend to bite into bark crevices more, need to find the right balance.

Of course with my Hook in play I haven't carried my 50' of throwline in a long time ;-)

I pay out line from the reel before making my throw.

Best feature of the old Shakespear reel I'm using is the auto rewind function.
Yes, you need to figure out a way to lay loops across your leg for example if it's windy otherwise let the loop hang down before throwing, it's tricky, you have to deal with all the twigs and branches below you, very doable with patience.

Aerial Traveler,

Earlier this year I found this reel on ebay. It appears to be never used...but in the original box. A bit heavy, but old school quality. I thought you'd be interested. Yours looks like it's seen some good times!

Progressively shorter loops won't tangle as much.
