ID This Shrub- The Verdict is In

I got a response from Michael Dirr. He’s stumped and intrigued. His initial assessment was something in the genus Prunus (family Rosaceae, I stand corrected), specifically Prunus virginiana, but obviously the bark isn’t right. He has requested some current year stems which I will provide post haste.
Stay tuned.
(Thanks again for the suggestion JD)

I wouldn't worry about that. I've sent Dr. Shetlar pics and specimens of bugs that were probably easy for him but stumped me.

I did stump him once (common false pit scale) where he came to the site with me to collect samples to take back to the lab for analysis.

Preliminarily, Michael Dirr has suggested that it might be an interspecific or intergeneric hybrid of Symplocos paniculata.

Of course, why didn’t I think of that?

According to Michael Dirr, based on the cuttings I sent him, Symplocos paniculata. He happens to have one growing in his yard to compare it to (of course he does) but checked with his coauthor to be sure.
Dr. Dirr is very accommodating on something like this and his enthusiasm for plants is apparent. Makes you want to take a class with him.
