Sorry samples are not fresh due to lack of a camera until now.

This is the first occurence in the lady's yard in twenty years. Large trees nearby are Paper Birch, White Ash, Burr Oak, Red Mulberry, and a BIG Cottonwood.

Diane has it. With the recent thread that South sound posted about the same species it's fresh in my mind. Fairly prolific with root suckers.

EXACTLY! What I thought at first, but with no parent tree nearby - how did it get there? Definitely a root sprout, is it a mutant deltoides? ...or was the tree some hybrid in the first place, and now it's coming out at maturity?

Thanks for the help, keep thinking.

Are you sure it's woody? Maybe it's a perrenial. I'm not so good with herbaceous stuff but maybe. That would account for the sudden appearance.

Definitely a root sprout from a long woody feeder root. It's gotta be the alba but where is the tree? I'll have her scour the neighborhood to find the nearest White Poplar.

The original tree could have already been removed and this was a feeder root from it. These roots travel hundreds of feet so the parent tree may have been further away than just a neighbor's house.

OR

If there was any new soil or mulch brought to the property the root could have been in that or if any large equipment has been on the property and had the root stuck in its treads from another job site, etc.

Just be glad you caught it now!
