I thought Axeknot was gonna be my buddy when I got my first PM from him. Check it out.

The reason I take side swipes and backhanded jibes at you is because,

I worry that impressionable newbies and trainees come onto the forums, be it The Treehouse, TreeBuzz or Arboristsite and they read your posts about one handed use or lowering branches using your climbing line and think that its ok to do these things.

I know that other guys say these things as well, but you are held in higher esteem than these guys. The newbies see you as a wise ol school kinda hardnut. You know what young climbers are like, they wanna be cool and sh*t(dangerous) and macho.

Now I know you have been climbing for years and like me you know what you can get away with. We've been doing it long enough to know how to get the job done without always following industry best standards/Rule book etc.

These newbies need help from guys like Tom, Mark, Lazarus2 etc I've seen some advice these guys have given and thought, "oh God, here we go with all the safety sh*t"
Then I realise they are doing it to try to teach the newbies properly.

So I'm sorry for the threads I posted which targeted you, Mr Ed and the treehouse in general. I wont be posting anything like this ever again. But I will tell you if I think your ideas are sh*t as you would expect me to.

As for your current issues re Ekka and co I have no involvement in that whatsoever.

They are using IP screening websites to start new names and mess with current ones. I know this because I have visited the treehouse.
Ekka should stick to videos, there very good most of them anyway.

I noticed that grover is back, well its not the real grover, I know the real grover in person(Scott McKechnie). I used to send emails to him to gang up on you, I thought some of his posts were hilarious(see wow arborist ethic in the UK).
He is now out of treework and working as an immigration officer. If you look carefully you will see that his IP number is the same as mine. Whoever it was that did this they did it to piss me off as I wont join the turdhouse like they requested I should as I have been negative about your posts in the past.
I checked through grovers past posts and for the most part the number is the same as mine. How they are doing this sh*t is beyond me.

I am bored with the whole anti-treehouse thing.

The weather has been the worst I've seen in years, did you get a lot of storm damage on Hogmanay?

I've been doing storm damage all last week out on the west coast. One was 60 ft Leylandii(tall for a Leyland) took out the side of someone's house. It was a wooden house with cedar shake on the outside walls, heavy tree! Oh well one less Leylandii is good news for me. Poor guy could never get proper insurance cause the house was entirely made from wood.

Leylandiis seem to be very prone to windthrow, small structural root systems from what I can see. I've seen some bad branch failures in Big Monterey Cypresses over the last week as well. The West coast gets hit with the Atlantic storms, Although someone from Edinburgh Council Arb Squad was saying he had a lot of street trees and park trees down before christmas.

Other downed trees I have seen this week, Salix alba, Alnus glutonosa, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, mixed bag really mostly in wet ground but Tilias are holding up well must be the light wood.

Remember the boxing day storms in 98? I was talkin with some other treeguys and we came to the conclusion that those storms probably knocked out a lot of poor trees which is why we are seeing less storm damage these days even in very high winds like last week.

What do you reckon?
 
we were on call to Edinburgh council over christmas and hogmany, we were not called out however as they were running on a skeleton crew i was told.

All the damage i have seen has been big old trees that were most probably due to start losing limbs etc soon anyway. that and garden trees. slowly all the trees blown in woodlands are coming to light. I wasnt working in 98 so i cant comment.

I turned down a job with the Council Arb squad a few years back and i have a guy asking me to join the Eddinburgh Arb squad now.

They are an organised crew so I hear.

Not sure what the pay would be like, I reckon you would get good holidays and sick pay, but beyond there is no way you would makes as much as being a subcontracting climber.

Maybe be a ok option short term. Maximum working hours, long breaks etc. Especially this time of year.

If you are a good climber I would suspect they would have you doin the bigger trees.

Those that can do, those that cant work for the council.
I get by and have a good reputation as a climber and feller.

I have thought that as well many times, and I am glad I always managed to avoid being directly employed by a council.

I suppose for many people particularly those with families it is about job security.

Being self employed is not much fun when work is slow.
On the flipside You dictate the prices you charge and who you choose to work for. so there is relatively more control and freedom.

I know a few very good climbers and knowledgable tree officers who work for councils, so I would strongly disagree with your view, "Those that can do, those that cant work for the council"

But I know exactly where you are coming from. These people are the exception to the rule.
 
as long as you get the general gist, i know a few people who work for the council because its an easy ride

In my experience I can also say that many have chosen the path to self employment as they are unemployable. There certainly is no shortage of hopeless contractors who have turned their back on the good Lord and taken the highway to hell.

Ironically, that can be changed.
