I need a new cell

My phone has been thrown too many times and it is showing. I'm looking for a new non-nextel phone that works well and is durable.

At this point, I like the motorola v710. Anyone have this?? or any suggestions would be helpful. /forum/images/graemlins/Screen_of_Death.gif

My phone company has given me new phones every other year or so just for renewing my service. Of course they didn't offer until I asked them what they were willing to do to keep my business. But anyway, I just use the cheap Nokias they give me and I leave the stupid thing in the truck while I'm climbing. Spend the $30 for a leather case with belt clip and clip it on your sun visor when you aren't wearing it.

We really like our Nextels also. They don't have good coverage when I go on deer hunting or rock climbing trips in the sticks but they work really well in the areas that we work. And they have heavy duty phones that our almost impossible to break.

mixed feelings

I am a Nextel customer, the 2 ways are sweet, its nice to be able to reach contacts at the push of a single button. The concept is great.

The coverage sucks, whenever the conversation is important is when you only get every other word. Their customer service is the worst Ive ever dealt with(besides aol)
As far as their heavy duty phones go... a marketing ploy. They are all the same, in 1 year maybe 2 it'll be junk and you'll have to buy another one. I am on my 3rd phone in 4 years, sure they can fix em when they break for near the cost of a new one. Besides with technology today they are like computers, if its over 2 years old its obsolete and hardly worth repairing.

My most recent phone was purchased this spring, because the bulletproof model I bought last year just quit working agter 10 months, anyway I asked nextel what my collection of old nextels would get me on a trade up. Their answer, 6 dollars a phone /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif

What a bunch of crap, Ive been a customer for 4 years, buying a new phone nearly every year and they will only give me 6 bucks a phone(they sell reconditioned ones for 10 times that) /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gif
Then there is the cost factor, why is there service so damn expensive? it's not like they have superior coverage and service.

Re: mixed feelings

Tom, yes Ive used them on crane jobs to communicate with the operator when we couldn't see each other. The boom mic works good, but you still have to push the PTT button to speak. Gets tricky sometimes midway thru a cut, to reach up and push the button whilst holding a saw in the other. A voice activated boom mic would be great, but it would probably open the channel as soon as you fired up the saw.

i own this phone. i like it because it has bluetooth and other nice features. although i understand only two companies carry it, one is verizon and the other i've never heard of. its a good phone but i put mine in the truck when working

I've got over 100 hours on the v710 and love it. Definately the best phone I've ever had. Nextel coverage here blows, so speakerphone comes in handy while driving.

I have the i830 and use the speakerphone a lot.

Do you get better reception when using speakerphone?

Speakerphone is good when you're on hold. You don't actually have to hold the phone, ironically enough! But the speaker cuts out because it hears itself and thinks it should turn off the speaker. It think's you're talking, so hushes the speaker automatically. Can I turn that crappy function off?

You sure can nick. I had that same phone and loved it. Sorry i don't remember how to turn it off, but Nextell does. I've had the i58sr now for about a year, it's a killer phone. Direct connect is the bomb.

hey, there is a "behind the desk" section of treebuzz! kindda cool. never been here, quite interesting
i know that this is a late entry for this post, but i have nextel i530 (supposedly a heavy duty work phone). the only problem that i have with it is the retractable antenna. the utility pocket in my arborwear pants fits the phone snugly with the antenna outside the pocket... but the antenna catches recently cut branches and breaks (i had to replace a few times). if the phone is turned the other way (inside the pocket) the phone is hard to pull out, but no problems.
as for speaker phone, i hate talking on the phone while driving, so the speakerphone works perfectly.
the 2 way works great, but i am the only employee with nextel, so that kindda sucks. i offered to let the climber use it when on crane jobs, but they would rather use hand signals with a median in the middle.

hey treedr, what phone did you end up getting?
since sprint is now teamed up with nextel, does anyone see an improvement of coverage?

I am waiting for my carrier to pick up service for the Palm treo 650 . it will combine my Palm, cell and basic digicam, video cam and MP3 player in to one unit.
