I had a jumper

Did a cat rescue the other day. Had good access for the crane so I figured easy. Nope...I got with in a foot of the cat and it bailed . It jumped from 50'up the tree and went a good 40' horizontal. I know I wouldnt have run if I did that. The cat appears to be ok except for a tender back leg. Scared the crap out of me though.

Ha.

Happened to me before. On my way up, cat's getting nervous. Bailed at about 50', landed three inches to the side of a nice jagged rock, scurried off and the owner said she was fine.

I have done two. Been lucky and they stayed still while moving in very slow with the bucket truck. Both times I started above them, and worked my way down over them. I really felt like I was going to rip there feet from there bodys before I got them off the tree. I was worried I might do more harm than if they had just jumped... Just could not find the release button.

I usually only do cat rescues after the kitty has been up there for at least a couple of nights. They tend to be more cooperative then, making it safer for everyone.

Yep 1 mile down the road. Tree was a poplar and the cat was at the tip of the branches. Definately the safest alternative since I dont have a seperate bucket truck.

I learned a trick on my last rescue...
Bring a bag to put the kitty in.
In said bag, stow a can of tunafish and a can opener.
When you get close to the kitty, open the can...the sounds and the smells will make the kitty very compliant!

Brilliant! I'll have to remember that.

The first rescue I ever did involved climbing a half dead cottonwood then having to snap cut the top out of the tree to lower the cat down to me. Quite the cluster if I may say so.
The last one I did involved the cat flipping out of my hands and then reattaching itself to my back then to my chin with its claws. The whole time the owner was yelling at me to just throw the cat out of the tree. I just didn't feel right getting paid to throw a cat out of a tree.

Went with a bud to get a cat out of a tree today. Well Murphies law was in full affect. Big shot launch first one darn well almost took the cat out. ( hid from owner and spit out my coffee was laughing so hard) . 2 big shot launch on the mark well pulling throw line back up weight got snagged and almost took cat out again. Owner looked at me and all I could say was " Jump cat he's just going to knock you out of the tree". Owners husband laughing owner is trying not to laugh bud is holding onto throw line laughing cat is looking down. He gets up there cat hisses at him ( wonder why), turns and bolts for the branch and hauls tail down the tree, almost out in the road and jumps right into the storm door. I lost it al I heard was "Windex huh" and the husband was rolling laughing now so where we and owner well laughing now.

So far no jumpers. I usually take my time and talk to them, pet them, then slowly lift them forward to disengage their claws from the tree. The last one was a cat that I've now rescued 5 times. The owner has become a good friend that took my kids and I on a private tour of the Met Museum of Art in NYC in exchange! Sweet deal. I'm thinking the cat goes up the tree to get me to visit!

Just had a relatively easy one yesterday, other than the fact that the tree had no central leader and was completely overtaken with bittersweet vine.

The last two before that were jumpers, but both landed safely.
