I f'd up

On the 2006 bucket truck, altec 60-E 70 LR4 (or 5)...

I left the PTO engaged and came back in the morning to move the truck... Before I started it up I didengaged the PTO which is air driven, then thinking I w should wait to disengage it until the air pressure comes up, I re-engaged the PTO. Then started the engine and let it idle. I walked to the other side of the house and came back in 3-5 minutes, to hear the gears grinding away as the PTO was trying to eengage without the clutch in. I turned the truck off, and disengaged the PTO.. When I re-started the engine and engaged the PTO there was no action to the outriggers and no grinding noise. I hear the air pft as ususal when the switch ins engaged.

Any thougts?

I hope the trans is OK... I just replaced it for $5,800...

The PTO could be rebuilt according to the mobil lift service manager. There's also the actuator or whatever that's called .. perhpas that burned up..

I just got really busy.. ANd the lawns are still dry enough to drive on. this is a bad time for that truck to go down.

Thanks

Drove the crane down the interstate for an hour with the PTO engaged. Its a load sense pump so that was a plus. Ended up costing me about 4k to fix mostly due to access., Didn't; damage the pump or trans but caused a leak and sheared some mounting bolts. Good luck

I built a chip truck our if a bus. Automatic transmission so no pro gear in the transmission

I bought an add on hydraulic pump that mounted on the engine just like a second alternator. I installed an on off rocker switch the lit up red when it was engaged. The rocker switch was mounted on the dash where it couldn’t be missed.

I did this once with my grapple truck, luckily no damage to the pto on mine.

When the pto is engaged, can you hear it running when you accelerate the engine? Perhaps it's something else causing the outrigger issue?

Bad pto seems logical given the circumstances, but I'm pretty sure mine grinded for much longer than 5 mins and still worked. Of course different trucks, ptos, wear and tear...

The good news is, I've only done it once. You'll likely not do that again either [emoji16]

Agreed about the timing.
These are big earning weeks, dry ground, lots of work being OKed. Possibly the best part of the year.
Gotta rattle it out and cash the chèques, any delays atm hurt the bottom line.

My friend has a tree company very small but we were doing a big land clearing job. With alot of cutting dragging and piling.

All to a ride on skid steer with a grapple and they were supposed to fill in the ditch along our work area but never did. So we’re tried to build it up with mats but didn’t do enough. I was bringing a pile to the chipper and had to lift the pile up about 3ft that’s all there was a little fence from the construction guys. So i ended up going off the side of the mats just enough to tip over the ride on skid steer.

I guess I didn’t shut it down fast enough and vapor locked it. Which cost my friend $1,500 and a week with a lot of dragging
