I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

I climbed for the first time today and man I am beat tired. My dad started to climb and he can't do sh*t for climbing although he's done it during his younger days and now since he's 52 years old and smokes 2 packs of cigrettes a day he gets wore out too fast. After I finish this tree job up tomorrow I tell you all that I dont't wanna climb again, I'll have my friend climb for me since he has no problem doing that. Bucket truck is the way to go.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Soon as I'm done production climbing all day, I go home check in with the family and go find a nice big tree to climb and relax in. I think it's a state of mind, body and soul. It is a passion more than it will ever be a job. Well, to me anyways. Just give it some time..... and don't think of the "bucket" as "the way to go"... should be more like... "Climbing is the ONLY way to go"... oh yeah!!!!!

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Takes a little getting use to Donald. I ran a spiderlift for almost 4 years, sold it and started climbing again. At first it tired me out but now I'm well adjusted.

Climbing is fun, bucket work is well... kinda boring.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

You don't always get that tired. Climb long enough and you'll get so efficient you'll start gaining weight because you're getting less exercise. But it's super hard at first, gets easier as you go though.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Will be hard days first. Then easy days to follow. But to get through the hard day takes some determination. Then the reward.
What style or method of climbing are you using?

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Half the problem with being tired when you first start, I think, has to do with how tence you are because its all new. In addition, I found myself working harder because I didnt know what to do, how to do it, or where to go next. Make your plan and stick to it. Dont give up on it cause of one day. Give it a chance.

It will pay off.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Took my ground man up a tree today. He burned a lot of energy do to the fact that he didn't quite have the right gear to make him more efficient. The other thing was that he never really had a high enough TIP.
Time in the trees really helps you "LEARN" how to climb more efficient. I encouraged him to do more rec climbing, you should do the same Donald.

I just used a flip line and a harness. I only had to take a few branches off this tree so we could fell it safely and so it didnt have too much weight to one side.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

I'll still climb if I have to but it is exhausting doing the climbing thing but I feel accomplished after today since the job is done. Would be nice if I had the whole climbing thing down and all the right gear and know how to use it like doing SRT or DRT climbing but I don't know anyone who will teach me.

How on earth did you climb the tree with only a flipline? I assume you were free climbing a bit?
My God man, at least take two fliplines so you can use the alternating lanyard technique. No need to ever come untied. Might as well make one of those fliplines about 100 feet long.
Now your climbing

Also, I dont think I have ever free climbed a tree....more than 1000 times or so.
Not so much these days though.
Stay safe

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Make a point of stretching before and after, especially when you're just starting out. Tired is one thing - muscle strains are another.
Also make sure your gear is fitting properly. That could go a long way towards better or worse climbs.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

There is a double lanyard that has a prussick in the middle. You need both hands to adjust the slack. When I first started it was not easy but all I thought about was getting to the top and tieing off. That is actually what you need is to tie off with a climbing line because it is so much easier to move when you don't have to fight your wieght. Learn your climbing knot and make sure your gear is good then trust your gear. If you.have the "want to" you will learn. If you don't feel safe come down. Listen to what is being said to you and if you don't understand have them show you till you understand. I know two climbing knots I prefer the blakes hitch because once you set it it stays the same the whole climb. Remember tie it dress it set it. All knots.

I climbed 2 trees and they were vertically straight trees so thats all I used.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

I've let my employees spike up and chunk down 30'ish spars of smaller treesin firewood length as training and to break up the monotony of ground work, only to have them come in the next day telling me that they are sore from it.

Using new muscle movements usually will get people regardless if it is from playing soccer, climbing and chunking down a tree, or ballet. Each is tough. When people make something that should look tough, look sorta easy, its because of training and experience. I know that I really tried to do some of the ballet routines that my S.I.L's sister does, I'd be whooped, but they look like they are just floating around and jumping a bit.

Couple this with using a saw at height, while strapped to a tree performing potentially dangerous treework, and people usually are over-straining their muscles. Efficiency and relaxation come with time. These do wonders.

I'm glad you have had a taste of climbers' efforts. Its good for you to both know what it is like from an exertion perspective and knowing what it looks like from the bird's eye view. You will have a better idea of why a climber might want a second opinion on if something will fit into a dropzone, why they might want you to move further back, or if you're waiting on them for the next piece, why they want you to stand where you can easily be seen.

On the flipside, its good for a climber to occasionally remind themselves of the toiling going on down below, where workers have to fight gravity (lifting), or at least work perpendicular to it (dragging).

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Good point Sean, once you've done it a while and start to develop habits, preferably good ones, you can relax more. Standing on spikes with a saw for the first time is anything but relaxing, it's almost overwhelming if you're up high on a spar.
Do that 10 or 15 times and it eases off quite a bit. Spikes are fairly comfortable once you get used to'em. They make climbing easy.

You reacted the way most folks do after their first production climb. It gets better. In fact, if you keep doing it, you'll be pissed if someone else gets to climb instead of you.
