I can\'t figure the species of this one

I was looking at a client's personal arboretum yesterday, and this tree's species was brought up. Nobody knew the species name. It looks like it's a fruit tree. It was lopped up badly, so the tree's shape couldn't help define the species.

Great arboretum though. Use to be a Japanese ambassador's son's estate. The place has overgrown since, but there's many species and a great, antique layout. 1940's estate.

Right off the top, I would say yellow buckeye. Aesculus flava. It is certainly aesculus. I'm not certain of the species without a little more info. Region, bloom color, etc.

California Buckeye? This one looks just like it; bark and all except for this one's seed is too round. I'm seeing pics of the seeds with the tops of them protruding where the stem attaches. Mine here are round without a protrusion, and I didn't see any big seeds on the ground. I didn't look either, but I would think that seeds that big would stand out especially if they are poison and uneaten by wildlife.

Thx TNT

Get yourself a book of the trees of your area. Make sure it has keys.

If you are starting to learn check leavse and buds first, not tree shape or bark..

We know immediately that your tree has palmate leaves and opposite leaves (and buds) that narrows your choices down. If you know that it is a buckeye then you might identify by the presence of pear-shaped fruits. In this case the photo does not show that, but it could be you need to look at a range of fruits to understand what is within the range of normal.

Why not get this book?

Trees and Shrubs of California - John D. Stuart; Hardcover

Re: I can\'t figure the species of this one

I just ordered a strew of books for this area similar climates. It should turn out okay. Thanks for the reference.

That bark pattern, combined with the other stuff makes me think it's a zapote (or sapote) tree. Good fruit!

Ya, the buckeye seed is the wrong shape; more of a pearish looking seed with no flesh in the hull.

The sapote fruit is the correct shape, and it has more than just a seed in it. I remember the HO saying that there was fruit in it with a large, dark seed. It does sound like a Sapote to me, and they harvest them south of here down in Mexico.

Thanks, Nick. Good eye
