thank you all for ur time be safe an have fun life is short love one another

To become a certified arborist what you're talking about with the schooling and what not is there prerequisites for taking the exam to become a certified arborist. Basically you have to have been working in the field with trees for some many years so you get that practical experience. Then you put in an application with your job history on how long you've been doing it and with what companies and then if they accept it and that you're not making it up then they let you study and take the exam. Then if you pass yahtzee.

The ISA has been very good and fair in setting up their prerequisites for their exams. They allow for those with lots of schooling to bypass a lot of practical experience and those without schooling to to take advantage of practical experience. I fall into the latter category.

The advantage of schooling is less time in trade is necessary. However, an old sage once told me, "A man learned of experience is never at the mercy of a man learned of theory."

In any industry it seems that those who have earned their credentials coming from a bulk life experience have a slight edge over those fresh outta school. However, the practical learning curve for those fresh outta school if short so they rapidly catch up.

Meantime, if you haven't already, check out the ISA site for the exam prerequisites:

www.isa-arbor.com

Also, while you are working towards qualifying for the CA exam it is probably a good idea to go for your Certified Tree Worker first. It is a good pre-exam of what you may find on the CA exam!

As would is right about the CTW first. If you're profecient in climbing with some knowledge it's an abbreviated test and from what I understand it is in the works to get it rolling in Ohio and get one set up as I am working with Chris Ahlum to get one going sometime this summer or spring hopefully.

thank you all...
i was just wondering cause i talked to some people who worked under an arborist an said they went through an apprenticeship...i did't read anything about that on the website...

Benj, to become a certifed arborist the general concept is to work and study while you work in the field of arboriculture and to learn as much as possible acedemically as well as practical experience, then after a three year period of this learning by doing as well as furthering your knowledge through reading and practicing you will be ready to take the test, and because of the time and dedication put in you will probably pass...The company you work for probably has programs for advancement and maybe you shoould talk with them about your interests...GOOD LUCK .

You need 3 years of verifiable green industry experience in addition to passing the test, unless it has changed in the last couple of years. You do not need to work with/ for a CA to become a CA.

I'm sure it spells it out on the ISA website.

the test cant be that hard? i mean if you know basic pruning knowledge like the 1/3 rule, making proper pruning cuts, planting and selection, safety procedures and stuff like that it cant be that hard can it?

like what kinds of questions do they ask? i really could use some help too on this.

I would recommend that you purchase the Certified Arborist study guide. It covers all of the domains and gives sample questions.

All green industry experience counts. Mowing lawns, working in a nursery, etc...

There is a recommended list of publications.

Once you certify, don't stop. It's just the beginning. As Bruce Lees' Shaolin master helped him to see...

Master: What is the greatest techinque you hope to attain?

Bruce: To have no technique.

no way will i ever stop! I LOVE TREES arboriculture is my life, i can talk about trees and tree work for days! not just the work aspect but i love learning about trees the most. they are to me one of the most amazing living organisms on this planet!

yeah i know it's in there.

it used to be, to pass school you had to know the earth was flat...sorry, no derail. you learn the rules until you learn there are no rules, which is scary territory.

test stuff is clear in the guide
