How much more does a crotch weigh??

Just did one today where a 5 section had most of the crotches on it...been doing ut long enough to know that a 25% increase in weight is very easy to run into...but that's part of the problem of trying to use a formula...you can't see everything...you dont know what it's like in the center of a big diameter chunk. Rigging smart and sometimes an extra cut is needed to get yourself better setup.

Yes! At this point it's an academic exercise that if done now won't be one I need to do in the moment. The other aspect is making sure we have plenty of capacity to work with. By creating options now it can open up possibilities that otherwise may not exist.

Wow...didnt know husky made that stuff...and WOW that is a lot of crap in a tree. Sounds like a t&m job...good luck with that one humpy! Get lots of pics and vids...how does one even get all that in one tree??? Jeeze.

Wire saws are cool but not quite the portable needed. :bailando:
If we get the job, there's going to be lots of pic and some serious video. But we'll know by the beginning of the week if this becomes more than a thought exercise.o_O

I completely agree: concrete makes things interesting.

Looks like a wire saw manufacturer could come out with something with more portability for smaller cuts.
Hydraulic hoses to a hydraulic motor mounted to the spar, close to where you plan to make your cuts, with the appropriate pulleys as needed for redirects.

1600' or 160'?
1600.. Davey did the work in 1924 and had kept an inventory of the materials used.
What about using tomography to map the junk hidden in the tree, so that you could cut around it?
That is our plan. It may be that we can only use it on the main bole which is the big pick. The distance for the crane is 70' from the center of the crane located on the road to the far side of the trunk. Currently we have a 150 ton crane spec'd but I'm not sure if that will give us the safety margin I'd like.

That trunk is 78" DBH or 20'4" circumference.

Holy crap! That tree is 600 years old. It was an old oak when Columbus came over!

You are going to have to surgically lift every scrap of concrete and cabling out of there to keep from hitting the civil war tombstones, and bombing the chunks into the spot where George Washington and Lafayette had a picnic, @treehumper you sir are a brave soul and I can't wait to see the documentary, be sure to post updates and start a thread, what a project!
