How many Arborists...

How many Professional Arborists are there in the world ?
...Or at least the ones who do rigging and tree removals.

Also, Does anyone have an idea of what percentage them use Tree Buzz ?

Another interesting statistic would be how many members of Tree Buzz are professional arborists versus Tree Climbers who do this for Hobby, Sport, Fun, etc. ?

1. I think you need to modify the "Arborist" criteria:
tree preservation, proper pruning, disease treatment, etc.

2. I was recently thinking that the number of folks on Tree Buzz seems to be decreasing ? ? ?

3. I'm a retired Chem E.
Now Just a Rec Climber, who happens to be interested in TCC's.

Jeff,

No offense intended to the arborist experts out there. I do not know much about tree care and have all the respect in the world for their expertise. I wish I knew more, but I think the trees would be safer if I leave that to the experts :-)

My background is in Computer Engineering and it is in my nature to constantly look for new things to learn about. I have done photography for over 10 years. I used to ride a motorcycle, but gave it up when I realized I would eventually end up as road kill if I kept on riding longer. I took up rock climbing 6 years ago, and took to tree climbing this year because:

1- It fun, challenging, and great exercise to climb trees
2- It is easier to find nearby trees on Long Island than rocks
3- There is a ton of technology behind tree climbing

This forum seems to have people with diverse backgrounds and interests ranging from professional arborists, competition climbers, and tree climbing enthusiasts. And there are probably a few others like me out there who also find the technology interesting...

That is the reason I am curious to know who is out there.

-Michael

Michael,
It's probably best to set up a poll on this one. I'm not sure that everyone would participate but you'd get some numbers to average at least. I will say you CAN trust what you read on the site. If someone gives misinformation it'll be shot down pretty quick.

Welcome to Tree Buzz Michael. I don’t know how many Pro Arbs there are in the world. I am amazed at how few people use this site compared to the collective knowledge and experience that is available here.

Percentage of interest is a topic that has always interested me. For a while in life I put too much stock in what doctors said and believed that I had to find another career/business than tree work. I went into partnership with a friend of mine in a gun shop. At one point Browning was coming out with a much anticipated reproduction of the venerable Winchester model 12 shotgun of old. They produced only 4000 units of the model 12, 20 gauge high grade version. Out of all the gun enthusiasts in the whole world, and how many were excited about the model 12, I thought that run of shotguns would sell out in a short time and if you wanted one you better buy it quick. In reality, they were available new from suppliers for at least three years. That amazed me.

Fun to hear of your interest in trees and gear. Off to do my Somatics movements so I can work this next week.

Hi Marden,

Mark and I have access to some stats about TB useage but they don't really amount to a good insight into the industry.

No one know how many people do treework either. there are some guestimates but I would really like to know how they come to their conclusions.

Glad to have you on TB!

My guess the number of active Arborists is quite high. I just took a look at International Society of Arborists web site (http://www.isa-arbor.com). There are 47 chapters spread across 14 countries. Most of them are in the US, but 16 are in other countries around the world. There is a NY State chapter broken into 9 regions spread the state totaling 604 members. Even at just an average of 200 members per chapter this translates to over 10,000 members.

ISA LinkedIn group has 3,600 members
Trees LinkedIn group has 5,600 members
There is an ISA Facebook group page, but no member info

There are about 25,000 ISA Certified Arborist around the world. However, would be difficult to determine exactly the number of practioners, scholars, administrative officers or those that hold managerial duties.
