Hitch Hiker

I don't know all the in's and out's of the business. Sure there are others that will pick up the slack.
I just have to say, I do not climb on it as often as a pure mechanical device but it is perhaps the most compact and versatile of all the tools I have used. It does things other tools cannot do. I would never give it up and my activities would be limited without it.

Hey Hitchhikers,

I never had my hands on a HH, I am a WRer, however I am considering making the switch. One question I have is if a person is able to use a XT with the HH. It seems all i see people using is five wrap two braid VT. It also appears the HH might get in the way of the X part of the XT if that makes sense...

well I figured I would be using the HH knot regardless of which particular prusik I was using. The XT just wraps around itself before the 'braids' and i think the HH might get in the way of it, was wondering if anyone had any experience with the XT on the HH...

It is simply a Valdotain or Valdotain without the Tresse part. Just wraps, no braids. I find it works best also, as it keep the compactness of the HH intact. Of course you could use your favorite friction hitch but it just won't be that great compact HH with just the Valdotain.
I find to get it to tend well I have to sit on it a few times, descend a little and pretty soon it is set and working perfectly.

k so by HH knot you are talking about the hitch? I thought the HH knot was for the end-knot after the dog bone? The picture above looks fine and I will try it. I just always preferred the XT to the VT or even the V because it requires just a bit less need to tend it (the VT, I found, can occasionally start to come down on itself).

It seems that maybe the XT is not for use on the HH...

The HH knot, to me is the hitch. The dogbone knot is the stopper or the HH stopper if you will.

I have been running my HH on 11mm Sterling HTP for a few months and IMO it is a big step up from traditional arborist ropes. Using static kernmantle lines has its caveats and risks like anything, but to me it is a great setup.

Thanks bonner. I am aware of those caveats, I was interested in how it runs through the HH, and I'm glad the 11mm is working nicely. I'm gonna be trying some 12mm soon, hopefully that runs nice too.

With regards to the HH knot/hitch. Thanks for the info, I will try it out... also will try the one in the picture over at treestuff...

Cheers!

hey goodpredator, i think the xt would be too much of a pain to tie in and i think your right, the x part would get in the way. another thought is to run the hitch orientated backwards which might help. ill give it a shot when i get a min and get back to you.

First post in this thread in quite a while. I'm just getting a hitchhiker now and probably everybody else is all "OMG Akimbo."

Anyways, I was wondering if anybody actually experimented with making a tether that would be rated for life support? I've reviewed MOST of the posts in this thread and loved seeing the creative and beautiful things you've all come up with. It occurred to me that 1/4" Dyneema cord is rated for life support and could be an option. I understand the concerns about the tether interfering with the device. Primarily i am wondering if anybody has experimented with this at all yet as a practical option for switching to Ddrt.

Thanks!

I use the stiff horseshoe tether wesspur used to sell. Clip another carabiner on my bridge ring. Pass the eye of the rope thru the tether and clip into that second carabiner on my bridge ring. Use it ddrt and having it in this configuration keeps the hh upright and in place and from floppin all over.

I have gone the other way and no longer use a tether on the carabiner at all. For DdRT the least complicated way to go is just clipping into a bridge ring. For ascent and everything else SRT, this setup is superb.
