Hitch cord for Fly

I've been using an eye and eye made from ultratech. It's ok, but I wish that it was more flexible because it doesn't always grab the rope right away. I tie vt's and distel mostly, I'm beginning to like the distel alot more.

I use 3/8" ultratech for my VT with pretty good results. I also have a technora split tail that doesn't grab as well on the Fly, but it's easy enough to just throw another wrap on it.

i think Nick's idea of using the smaller diameter to maintain ratio of hitch cord to host diameter for grip. i like Tenex; it lays flatter to stategize the grip that way. It is pretty strong and in laying itself flatter than rounder cord, maintains more of the strength of the Tenex through a bend, by leveraging itself less.

Spydie I prefer a round cord for my hitch cords. I guess it all depends on what hitch you're using!

But you're right, as a general rule the hitch cord should be a few mm smaller than the host line.

I climbed quite a bit on the fly and tried several different cords. They all worked the same as on any other rope, nothing different really. Use whatever you always liked on other climbing ropes.
That's my two cents on that.
Jarod, the problem with cords with eyes spliced on them is they are hard to adjust the length. You can add a loop or cross, or take away a loop and add a cross, or whatever, but the same length cord and hitch combination on a 1/2" rope, will not work the same as on a smaller rope like the Fly. If you were able to adjust the cord length just sligthly shorter, it would grab better.
That's my two cents on that.
And since everyones always gotta throw their opinions in on a thread like this, my favorite cord is 5/16" Ultratech.
That puts the total value of my post at 6 cents. Sorry, no refunds.

I agree, 5/16" Ultra-techworks well and is my favorite, although i havent tried much else. I also agree that your better off tying eyes rather than using the spliced one, plus the cost difference is substancial. Alot of climbers claim they dont like UT because of the high cost, I myself am not bothered by it because I dont burn out of the tree and I usually can get anywhere from one to two months on the same hitch cord.
I am also exclusively climbing on the Fly.

Unless you know exactly what size you want it and you splice it yourself!

true Nick, but ive found that the spliced ones react differently due to the splice stiffening above the eyes, if ya follow what I mean.

As I posted in another thread, my favourite is Tech 12 for VT. I also use Ultratech and occationally othe cords but the dont´t lock so good and needs some attention before letting hands go. The Tech 12 is very easy to splice so one can make different lengths for 11 and 13mm rope.
