First time I saw that I was dumbfounded. A whole stand of Beech along a river just caked in sooty mold.
Those aphid are different from the Woolly Beech Aphid common to European Beech, correct?

Crusty sooty mold in on Red Oak. Reminds me of the same stuff from the Beech Aphid. Never seen it on Oak though.

Never seen wetwood produce sooty mold like that though. Usually the sugars have fermented. Weird.

Nor have I but it leaking from a sinus like that made me think of it.

I know all living creatures deserve self-determination, but I might make an exception in the case of those guys.
Actually, accurate ID of grubs (even with live specimens) is tougher than fungal ID from fruiting bodies, IMHO, so that's a wild guess from the snapshot. But yes, it's a sign of spring...at least to be digging for hydrangeas rather than shoveling snow!

Back at that property today. There’s little worms almost like nematodes living in the sooty mold. Should have got a pic but didn’t.

It gets weirder and weirder....
