Hey Look at My Crud...

Joe Boggs from our OSU Extension calls them the beech "Boogie Woogie" aphid as they "dance" in unison when disturbed.

First time I saw that I was dumbfounded. A whole stand of Beech along a river just caked in sooty mold.
Those aphid are different from the Woolly Beech Aphid common to European Beech, correct?
 
I know all living creatures deserve self-determination, but I might make an exception in the case of those guys.
Actually, accurate ID of grubs (even with live specimens) is tougher than fungal ID from fruiting bodies, IMHO, so that's a wild guess from the snapshot. But yes, it's a sign of spring...at least to be digging for hydrangeas rather than shoveling snow!

Hey I got it to upload after multiple tries.
Viburnum borer damage on V. carlesii that is declining and not likely to make it.
