Hey Look at My Crud...

Lovely, Mr Serf! As for ID, I'd start with Fomitopsis pinicola. Yes, the epithet (the second part of the scientific name) indicates hitting pine species, and that is true, it's one of the comparatively few switch hitters for both pine and hardwoods. I think I've only seen it on paper birch. And here it is! Or, I'd be happy to consider an alternative. I'm forgetful these days!

Mr Smith, you seem to be pretty dialed in on the crud. I'm wondering if you, or anyone else has any favorite texts/resources to recommend for fungal ID specifically relating to tree care?

Thanks Mr. Organic, well, I don't know as much as I used to, but I'll take that as a sign of spiritual development.

I used to recommend "Wood Decay Fungi in the Northeast and Central US" self-published in 2005 by Chris Luley, PhD. He hosts an excellent website with his free publications from TCIA and elsewhere, linked to: https://chrisluleyphd.com .
The reason I emphasize "used to" recommend is that he let it go out of print and is not readily available, although there may be used copies out there.

But there is hope, he is currently revising and expanding "Wood decay fungi....". I know this because I am kibitzing the process this time and reviewing the sections as he writes and before he publishes them. In fact, that's what I'm supposed to be doing right now! I don't know his timeline, but I'm sure he wants to get it out ASAP, but I don't what that is. I've never gone the self-published route.

As for my stuff, I did author a couple of little guides with overlapping coverage of more midwestern and western species and those are linked here and here and a sort of lightweight one here.
