hey guys check this out! Interesting

I've seen it before but the youtube thing kinda caught my attention.

Here's the Petzl info on it:

Of course we can't use this - the Petzl instructions specifically say: "This device must be used only with specific training"

and here's a YouTube video about it

AND notice how he ascends!!! You think that didn't make my day!!!!

BTW, that's a cocked and locked 1911 pistol WITH a tactical light attached, carried in a level two security holster. The long gun is a short barreled M4.

I've only used a grigri a couple times and forgot what they looked like. Petzl says the exo is based on the grigri. What's the difference? Just that tailing loop on the side? I don't know, is this thing exciting, should we want one? It seemed to work good in the video.

I think the difference is the Exo has the rope guide and I've heard that the Exo has all metal parts where the Grigri has plastic, e.g. the handle.

But, I can help you with the want/buy part. It comes as a package, it costs $395, and you have to be certified to even buy it, but there's a package deal including that too.

That slammed the door for me.

Petzl's decision to limit avaliblity makes no sense. They sell what appears to be inferior devices so why not release the exo. Law enforement/ firemen may get certified training but they can't be expected to be as good of climbers as those who do it every day, like tree climbers.

My guess is it has something to do with profits and marketing. Otherwise it's a mystery to me.

I use friction hitches and am satisfied with the performance, simplicity and cost. But since I can't have an exo and those beer bellied cops get them, I want one.

It's designed to be idiot proof for a targeted market (non-technical rope users) that's why training is required. The "keeper" on the Exo would limit the device for other uses, just installing on the rope would be a PIA and it only runs on super skinny and expensive rope. Too many reasons why I wouldn't want it. Interesting system though, thanks for posting it Ron.
