so i know this has prolly already been covered so if anyone can link me to a thread discussing locking off a figure eight then that will be fine.

i'm going to be doing some volunteer arobreal biomass processing at the boy scout camp i went to for oh so many summers. I have no idea what kind of work they have for but i am going to assume they want hazard wood removed in the campsite areas so i am plannin on climbing. I want to climb off a line anchored at the base of the tree in case of a rescue need. I have a porty, but want to keep it available for rigging. I was thinking of putting my 8 at the base with a VT hitch above it.

any other suggestions? i don't want to buy more gear. well i mean i do, but only if its necessary.

A trunk wrap belay would be simpler to install and [I think] easier to belay incase of a rescue.

+1.

Also, it sounds from your post that you have not used this method before. If so, be aware that, as in all systems, there are pros and cons. Probably the greatest danger is spacing out and not keeping track of where your single line attachment is in relation to you. Under normal doubled rope climbing, there is no extra component.

It is critical to develop the discipline to be aware of where that line is at all times. Try working this system in advance of lowering situations where there are even more lines in the tree.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious. I use this system all the time and really love it; but it does take a bit of adjusting your thought process and work habits to utilize it safely.

yeah, in all reality i don't think they are going to have me doing large removals so i prolly won't need the pow for lowering.

whats the most efficient way to back up the grigri?

The Edelrid Eddy is a MUCH more versatile tool than the Gri-Gri.

A stopper knot below the friction device is a good idea.

One solution is to tie a figure eight on a bite then clip the bite with a biner to the anchor sling for the friction device [Eddy or similar].

With a trunk wrap you need to have plenty of wrap-friction then tie it off with a sling. There is a thread on 'trunk wraps' already.

1. True, but also more $.

2. It's highly recommended.

3. A figure 8 on a bight will work. I use a 'slip hitch' with a biner in the bight and clipped to the sling.

4. Trunk wraps should be used as a last resort.
