Helmets for Groundcrew

I was wondering what kind of helmets you all use for your ground crew. I like the convenience and affordability of general hard hats you can get at Lowes, but they do not have hard shell ear protection. My Vermeer 1250 is so damn loud I double up with earplugs and hard shell ear pro, and my ears still ring after chipping for a couple of hours. Wearing a standard hard hat with only ear plugs is brutal in my opinion. What do you all think? Thanks

yeah,

I would like to hear the response too.
especially since my guys lost one of my 4 $90 petzel helmets last week.

the funny thing is that I buy them the ones with the straps and they dont even like them.

We've used standard hardhats bought at the local contractor supply. They ratchet suspensions and have slots for the peltor type muffs. We also buy the peltor muffs to go on them.

Hats are like 6 bucks and the peltor muffs around $21. We also keep a supply of ear plugs in the truck so folks can double up.

Haven't yet found a chinstrap though that works well for them. Some of our guys climb in these helmets too. I did for years until I bought my Pacific helmet.

Our full time workers (ground crew or climbers) get their choice of helmet. We just ordered a Kask for our best ground guy. Others have Pacific or Petzl.

The helmet should be something they want to wear. I used to work for a company that mandated a particular style of hardhat. They sucked, so the result was a bunch of guys who would rather work without a hard hat. Eventually I bought my own Petzl, which the boss allowed, but clearly didn't like.

most of our ground guys climb on smaller jobs, so we all have climber style helmets. Petzl and Pacific are most popular now, i just got a kask for myself and my coworkers are eyeing that up.

Kask make a tc version and a groundie version.

Where I worked before and helmets were required they were North helmets with side impact protection. Peltor ear protection. They did not have a choice about wearing them. Either they did or they did not work, simple. Everyone got use to them and didn't give me grief. Now that I'm not around they still wear them without question.

My experience:
For Ground-work I prefer a bright Orange Peltor helmet with the earmuffs AND the wire-mesh face shield. If sawing or chipping alot, I would also double-up with ear plugs AND muffs.
Always wear safety glasses too under the face-shield - After the first trip to the emergency room to get a sliver out of my eyeball.
Also: Wear gloves when working - not having cuts & nicks on your hands makes you a much better groundman (and climber).
Always Wear Chaps when cutting on the ground- after the first trip to the Emergency room to stitch up my knee I should have known this, scars don't lie.
Petzl hats are really more for climbing.
Peltors are really NOT for climbing, but are superior to Petzl for protecting your head & face when on the ground.
