Hard drive data recovery...mine crashed :(

I have an external hard drive that crashed. The IT geek where I used to work tried to open/recover it with some software programs. Another trick is to put it in the freezer then let it warm up. The freeze thaw sometimes unsticks the mechanism. Not on mine though :(

Now I need to send in to a 'clean room' shop to have it opened.

Has anyone had to use one of these companies?

Give me some hints...what to ask...costs...this is new ground.

I have a newer, larger external HD that I'm using. My next level of backup is to go to The Cloud...another frontier that I know little about. All that I hear is about 'Carbonite' but there must be others too.

I use Mac exclusively if that makes a difference.

Tom, are you using Time Capsule? You don't need to pay for carbonite if you do a time capsule backup every once in a while. Mine backs up automatically whenever I hook up the external drive....maybe once or twice a month.

Tom I use carbonite and it works really easily. Im also using iCloud and service ceo cloud for business stuff. The cloud is the way of the future. I would recommend if going to the cloud to ensure that the company has multiple servers in various parts of the world. As far as the data recovery aspect of losing a hard drive I have had little success in the past. good luck!

That's tough Tom. I also have not had very good luck (any) when it comes to recovering data. Using a program like Jobber keeps it all online and permanently safe - unless someone takes down the entire interwebs!

There are also some free options out there that provide this function. I use dropbox for personal stuff sometimes. Now, I've switched to using Google Drive for files and spreadsheets.

Good luck!

Jeff

Sorry to hear that Tom. You probably heard this many times, backup, backup, backup....and if you are like me, it means a lot after the fact.
Anyway, I run a Seagate GoFlex 2TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, it runs in the background, and everything is there if the drive on my computer fails, well, not if, when. Not very expensive too. But it is on site, if the house burns down......... although you could put it in a fireproof safe.
Cloud stuff is great but will probably cost you more, the big advantage and reason to pay more for this is that the storage is off site. Everyone used to worry about storing their sensitive and private information on someone else's server till they started calling it a cloud, now it just floats around and can't be accesses by criminal.
Funny story, I had a friend that took some pictures of something he probably should not have, they went to "the cloud", wife says, ????...answer...."our cloud must have bumped into someone else's cloud." That was close!

My Yahoo email account just got hacked into this morning Tom, so don't click on any links from an ostensible email from me.

Came down with the flu halfway through speedline removal, and had to dig deep to finish, which I did, barely. Nasty bugs goin round, both biological and electronic.
