Happy Thanksgiving! - But what does it mean?

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!
I wish you all the best in this season of festivities.
But what does it mean? I always thought that thanksgiving was a season of giving thanks for a bountiful harvest after famine (circa 1640?) in the Plymouth colony. The indians taught the pilgrems how to plant corn and so the famine(s) ended. Thus cause for rejoicing.
But on the radio today they were saying that the festivities were actually centered around the change in how they managed the colony.

The famines happened because the colonies local goverment was based on a socialistic system where each person contributed according to his/her ability and the gov. issued each pilgram what they needed to survive. But this system was not working because each person did not contribute enough so they changed the system by giving each pilgram a plot of land of their own and telling them they were now responsible for their own harvest. As a result of this the pilgrams had incentive to produce as much as they could and each did to the extent that they soon had enough crops (corn) to export.
This new system is the basis for our own system of capitalism.
Sooo thanksgiving is really a celabration of how to take care of yourself.

Is all this true?
I dont know just heard it on the radio but would welcome input from a better educated person I know their are at least a few on this board

I hate to say it but I don't think the native americans, "Indians", give thanks to the beginning of mass genocide. Seems harsh but thats all "we" did.
Happy Thankstaking. /forum/images/graemlins/ahhhhh.gif
