Groundies!

the few times that i have climbed, i found that the ground never got clear, ropes stuck in branches and the such. so now i kindda lean more to ground work. i just feel that more work gets done when i am on the ground cleaning up and untangling ropes. climbing is fun, but i would rather get home earlier

I've heard it said, that a good groundie is often also a good climber. A good climber on the other hand isn't necessarily a good groundie. I beg to differ... I actually think that's a load of hog wash.

You ought to know both perspectives, looking up from the ground as well as down from the tree to be a truly proficient worker. I feel it's an opportunity to give back to the team, being able to now and again assist a fellow climber with first class ground work (I like to kid myself that's what I do). I find it a somewhat arrogant attitude to be to aloof to drag brush. Dragging brush is part of the job.

Of course this is not true in all companies, depending on their size. But defintively I think you should at some time in a arb career do a stint of groudie-ing. Won't do any permanent harm - hopefully. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Groundies are the backstage help and climbers are on the stage. The show would suck without them though.

I work with 2 Irish groundies. One rocks, he has grounded for 10 yrs /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The other is technically a climber as he has the A&B certs making our team legal. He is a poor climber and worse as a groundie.

Groundie stories. My favorite was Bernardo from Honduras. I met him when I was subbing for another company and knew right away that I wanted him on my team. What caught my attention wasn't strength, etc - it was that at luch when everyone else was sleeping, smoking, or talking for the sake of hearing themselves, he was doing crossword puzzles to improve his english vocabulary. I knew right away, this guy is teachable. He was probably the best I have known.
