GRCS mounting mod

Yeah it's interesting to think about on a large diameter stem with the ratchet cranked tight. Are the forces spread out on the strap at all or are they really just concentrated close to the bollard on either side. I wonder what the replacement schedule should be on a strap that sees this kind of extreme loading on a regular basis...

My motto is: if you start to question it replace it. A sixty dollar strap once a year is hardly breaking the bank.
 
To me, a backup choker sling is to prevent something catastrophic, in the case of a total failure of the ratchet strap. Hobbs and Goods have never used a backup sling. Do I think it really needs it? I don't know, it's cheap insurance. The rule of redundancy says two is one and one is none. I think in the absolute worst case scenario, even with a bad flare, the choker sling would hold , allowing the crew to get the piece down. Hope to never test that theory...
