grappling hook

one of the guys at work has a claw, he used out heli-logging he let me use it when i had to some how spur less acend a large old growth cedar with all down sloaping branches, i climbed an ajacent tree, clawed a branch and used a friction hitch over and acender, less chance of failure, and released my climbing friction hitch and having my lanyard ready to snap on to a branch once i got over to the cedar, worked slick only took a few throws.

I just bought one of these. It looks like it'll work really well, built well and just the right amount of weight and the best price i found on anything similar.

let us know how that commando one works out - so far, not so good with the compact one that Wesspur sells. I've been using it lots but no liking it much - only 1 arm ends up catching. How many arms on those custom aluminum ones the loggers use?

I've used the 'commando' one a bunch now, works really well. That's not to say that it isn't frustrating and dodgy at times, especially on bushy/limby trees, but it sure can save a pile of time doing windfirming or similar work.
Pic shows a good set:

Close up. I put the hockey ball on top (there's a small clevis inside that the rope is tied to) so I could bounce it around limbs that I didn't want it hooking on.

Its the compact model on this page - only 3 arms, and I think 4 would be better. . .

thanks for this url. i think i'v checked every web site but wesspur. this grapple is exactly what i am looking for. a little pricey and maybe in need of a slight altercation. i'll be able to take a better look when its in my hands.

Just had an idea from the wood bicycle thread regarding the hook. How about a wood glue laminated veneer j-hook. It could be wrapped with cord or not. Easy to make it custom weights, sizes or shapes. Only problem might be you could make it too pretty for a tree climber.

a j hook seems like it would catch on things as i slide over and through places.

And that it would. They don't call em hooks for nothing. Like the Epple hook have a bungee from one end to the other to deflect snags.

very nice. great success. did you leave the one hook in for the reason of jumping the grapple around? Thanks for the link for the grapple. That's the right one!

The tines are hinged Ricky and are balanced to stay up, a quick shake usually brings them down if you need them to be down. The grapple came with a part to hold the tines firmly down but I removed it.

I think the cordage is a common 8mm dynamic rock climbing rope, I think made by Mammut but I don't remember. Definitely want something as hi-vis as possible.

Here's a video of it in use.
