grapple hook?

The other day I found what resembled a grapple hook in a deep fryer. It's a chinsy little one, but I attached some line to it and started throwing it around. It works alright, but is not heavy duty enough, or heavy enough. I'd like to buy one that isn't so dangerous, and will hold up to this line of work. Any recommendations on what to buy, or where to go for such a purchase? Definately not for climbing, probably just for grabbing low, hung up branches.

How heavy duty are you looking?? I would suggest Military Surplus, probally have more luck with surplus cataloges or websites though, especially if you aren't planning on climbing on it. My friend got a REALLY nice one dirrectly from the military. Not sure what kind of strings he had to pull to get it though.

Just something that won't bend easily when I start pulling on it, or if it gets dropped to the ground. I'd like to be able to hit 30' with it without any major troubles... 40' would be great, but I'll take what I can get. This little guy is hitting the high 20's without any trouble, but it's too darn light... adding 4 oz to the head would make a huge improvement, but it's too light duty to make the adjustment worth the trouble.

New Tribe sells a dandy grapple.

I can't use the 'other' spelling, I follow Jack Aubrey's vernacular.

Nick it looks like a seeing-eye catfish, cool!

I like my NT grapnel though there are times I wish it had just a bit more weight, shouldn't be a problem to clip extra weight on.

^ no arm fatigue form holding a extension pole all day! just cast the hook up over hanger limb, and PULL! or use a set of mechanical advatange pulleys and let the MA do the work for oyu.

The advantage of a pole vs a grapple?

Weight and size, for one thing. The other- the pole limits you to a reach the length of the pole...12' ish...maybe a little more.

You can swing the grapple 20' easy and more with some practice.

Spool that Nick\'s grapnel is attached to?

Nick, what's that cool looking spool for the line on your grapnel? Is it self-retracting? Where's a man get something like that?

Thanks for sharing any information about it -- it's least as cool as the grapnel . . .

climbers who limb for heli-logging use a little aluminum unit with folding arms. They limb on the way up, grapple over to the neighbouring tree and pull themselves over, and limb down. Gareth is on this site sometimes and showed me his a while back. It was very nifty and light - are you there Gareth?

The reels are made for fly fishing. The line retracts just like a tape measure and hold yards of throwline. You can find brand new ones at most fishing shops.

Take a look at the leash that I have for mine...a few posts above. The leash chokes onto my wrist and allows me to drop the reel and use both hands to set lines.
