gehl 140

Yeah, on level, firm ground it can lift any current mini to full height without issue. On soft terrain and/or downhill slopes you've gotta be careful as either can increase the radius of the load and destabilize the machine.

I've posted these before, but here are logs that all weighed a lot more than the biggest mini. The last log was a bit ridiculous, it weighed more than an AL340!

For those that have the 340, did any of you compare it to the kubota r420? They look about the same size. It seems like most people love their Kubotas. Or maybe it compares more to the 540. I'll have to research it.

The Kubotas are great loaders much heavier and spendier than the US made Gehls.
Gehl 540 specs are better than the Kubota 5201303157011095.webp 1303156986963.webp 1303157000709.webp

The Gehl is a 140 in these pics next to a Kubota 520

I have some, have to find them though.

Basically:
-The 520 lifts a ~8" higher, weighs a couple thousand pounds more, and costs ~$10k more.
-The 540 is available with 2 post or 4 post OROPS, or an enclosed cab with heat or heat and air conditioning. The highest spec 540 is cheaper than the base 520 last I knew.
-The 520 is wider and longer, less visibility and is noisier. The 540 specs higher in tractive effort, although that would be tough to tell aside from the 540 having a higher gradability due to more tractive effort and less weight.
-The 540 comes with push button locking differentials front and rear, the 520 comes with a limited slip differential (perhaps one in each axle).
-Lastly, the controls of the 540 are superior by far. The auxiliary functions, high/lo speed selector, forward/neutral/reverse, and differential lock switch are all on the right hand joystick. Under the steering wheel is the hydraulic power attach (optional), lights, beacons (optional) and probably something else. The 520 has a lever for the joystick and another for the auxiliary functions on the right hand. The f/n/r is on the left turn signal position best I remember.

I'm far from a Kubota hater, my track loader and excavator are both new Kubota's less than a year old. Still, for a compact wheel loader, Gehl is the winner down to the 400 and 500 series Avants. Above the 540 isn't terribly practical for residential tree work due to tire loading and machine size, but Terex and Wacker Neuson both make nice machines in that size.

im so far on the other end of the spectrum with our equipment needs, than that of those larger units!

I went from:

pickup
pickup + trailer
pickup + trailer + dumptruck
pickup + trailer + dumptruck + gehl 140

thats where Im at so far , just enjoying working my way up, not sure which machines Ill have in the future just yet. Most likely a lift next-

I started with borrowed saw, truck, utility trailer, and climbing gear 11.5 years ago. We had been grinding stumps for 5 years, and my parents were a big help.

its just the right speed, and has great lifting capacity

I have only put approx 30 or so hrs on it so far, but i have run swinger 2000 ag many hours . I know the swinger could lift more, but it also required a larger trailer and a huge log truck to accommodate its capabilities

i do not plan to ever drive it through a gate and did not intend to before purchasing it. i put duals on front and rear because i felt that was way more stable machine.

it made a huge difference going from duals on front only to double duals

Will you have a 540 w/cab at the expo? I would like to see one up close.

Going to adjustable bridge on my tree motion saddle seems to be a variety of stopper knots that people are using is there a science behind this or is it a preference

Carl, how about posting the pictures of our "head to head" comparison between the Gehl 540 and the Swinger 2000. The number of side by side and attachment plate to attachment plate photos would be good information.

540 vs 2000.webp Pretty much all I have is comparing the side profile of the machines. Did you take some as well?

i like the openness of the swinger while climbing on from either side, and the step ups are far superior imo

the gehl joystick is more comfortable control , just a little in the way when boarding machine from that side

both are great. for a small co like mine tho they are way overkill, the 140 is a perfect match
