Gear mania strikes again, I got another camera,

I'm excited, just got my 6th Canon this evening....a little fella this time, the A710 IS. Went into the camera store to get a better harness system for my Tamrac chest pack, and walked out with another bigger Tamrac chest pack, that will accomodate my huge 1D Markll and 70-200 f/2.8...boy that feels mighty heavy! and may bang my thighs when skiing with it....

The, after lusting after a $650 Gitzo carbon fiber tripod (no head) I got talked into the little camera. It is mighty nice...and small...much lower noise than my small Pro1, and its movie mode is awesome. It zooms, focuses and adjust exposure all during filming, just like a real movie camera. Wow, and all that for $300!

I've been wanting a pocketable camera, and this beauty will fill the bill. It is the largest seller of any camera in the world, they said. And the only little camera with a 6-1 zoom, plus it has all kinds of other cool features, like an intelligent digital zoom that keep the image quality much better than most digi zooms. And the movie mode is excellent, surpassed only by another new Canon, that has a 1024x768 mode! but only 4-1 zoom. That one is 10 mp. This one is 7.1, which is plenty for a little camera. And it has less noise at 800 ISO than my semi pro Pro! at 400 ISO. Plus, it can be found online for under $250...... It also accepts wide angle and telephoto add on lenses, just like my 2 other small cameras.

There some other good cameras out there, but, overall, Canon is still head and shoulders above them all...

Roger

You musn't be well.

There's no picture of the camera attached.

I'm sure you have made a good choice but I'm probably like many and haven't a clue what some of this is all about.

Anyway, some sample pics and comparisons to your other cameras would be really cool. We know your the man when it comes to stills.

You shoulda went for one of the Fuji compacts roger...their noise suppression is amazing! But congrats just the same!

[/ QUOTE ]relax, dudey....

I took about 60 of me, the camera with a pic on it, two monitors with my pics up, my wrinkled mug, and my kitty, some bouncing flash off the ceiling before I got a couple I liked.....and ACDSee, my main photo editor had crashed....now after reloading it won't work....

And just got home (6:45 pm) after working today, Sunday. Had a 100 foot, 32 inch at the ground, wolfy fir that had moved 8 inches at 10 feet, and dented the shed roof. AND the wind was blowing toward its 8-10 degree lean, 20-35 mph or so, which meant most everything had to be lowered. I lowered big bouquets of branches (speedline option wouldn't work.) It was fun getting blown around, but sure made to job harder. Some small branches thatI let go ended up blowing 80-100 feet away, into a greenbelt!

There also was a 70 foot skinny fir that was moving a good 15 feet at the top, and had a 10 degree lean from the storm. Luckily the wind died, and I did it later. We topped it by 18 feet or so, and thinned it. It was on a bank, and its roots help stabilize the hill, so it needed to stay. Will need monitoring every few years but should be fine....I hate topping, but this was the right time and thing to do.
Then we sold another tree removal for a neighbor, a 90 foot 18 incher, for $500. Had the new guy start it, but things ere moving too slow so I finished it. It was in close quarters but easy. Had one more job to do, but ran out of daylight, and its not an emergency. Lucky I have more work in that area, as its a long way from home...35-45 minute drive is a long way for me...

Then we finally found the damaged house a few blocks away that the client had told us about. A 50 inch or so lombardy poplar had darn near totalled the house, going all the way through..and even knocking the roof askew on the NE corner...it hit the SW corner. Luckily the occupants had been in the basement. Most of the tree and stump were gone. They'd told me it was a 6 foot dbh maple.....

Gord.... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/stats.asp

Canon all the way, baby. They're at the top (by a huge margin) for a reason, they are the BEST.....http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/stats.asp

The Fuji may have a mini cam with a low noise sensor...I see one of their little ones goes to 1600 ISO....the Canon only 800...but I saw a near grainless 16x20 print from it, shot at 800......my Pro1, while overall a better camera, is quite noisy at its top 400 speed...but none of the little Fuji's have even a 4-1 zoom....nor do they have a nice grip like the 710....and its movie features are awesome, more like a movie camera....

Gord.in my quiver is:

1D Mark 11.....17-40 f/4L, 24-70 and 70-200 IS, both f/2.8L, 300 f/2.8, 1.4x and 2x converters, new models...all Canon glass....old flash that isnt auto with the new cameras, as two others were stolen...so getting a 550EX and maybe the pricey 580EX as well, need two flashes, they are slaved to each other via radio.
next additions might be a 14mm lens, a 90-100 mm macro...and maybe a 85 f/1.8 or something fast and small...and a 5D....plus maybe a cheap 30D just for the odd times when I want to gain a 0.3 factor on the telephoto end. not bad when the 300 become a 480 f/2.8!!!, and 670mm with the 1.4 or 960 with the 2x....and 1344 with both convertors stacked! ---like Dolly Parton.

old stuff and for sale cheap....a 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma EOS mount, has LD glass, but won't work with Canon's AF system...It is optically awesome...and a 28-70 f/2.8 Sigma, both constant aperture.....it won't AF either....but also tack sharp...I'd sell them both to you for $125....I paid almost $1000 15 years ago, and they are in pristine condition except for their flaw......(they focus manually just fine...

Also have a EOS A2E that accepts all the EOS glass....

and a T70 non auto focus, FD mount, along with some stellar glass....Canon 85 f/1.8 and 28 f/2, awesome sharp little lenses, plus an 80-200 f/2.8 Tamron Adaptall mount, also LD glass and awesome..but now hard to sell like all the old stuff.....

Re: Gear mania strikes again, I got another camera

That looks like a nice little camera Roger. I recently picked up a Pentax W20 almost solely due to the fact that it is waterproof and will stand up to rainforest conditions. However, I have ended up being fairly pleased with it overall...especially considering that my other digital is a Canon!

It gets me lots of requests for palm topping...errr palm..

..greasing? heck, I dunno

Last year, we had a bunch of storms and work from them. I posted some pics, but no where near all, just too busy it seemed..But the Dec 14 one was the whopper, largest since 1962's Columbus Day storm...long before I was up in da twees....or in this neck o da hood....

Re: Gear mania strikes again, I got another camera

Need a darn ripper of a storm around here.

Sounds like Gord's got a challenge. Heck, I got an Olympus and wouldn't have a clue about noise ... I just shoot. Doesn't like low light though I know that, I often over ride the auto and knock it up a few notches but I love the 10x optical zoom.

You cheeky bugger RB
