Freedom of speach

There has recently been released a documentary in Norway over the struggle of professor Sami Al-Arian from Tampa Florida and his imprisonment for stating his opinion upon the Israel - Palestine issue. He has been in prison for two and a half year before the case went to court. He was sentenced not guilty but still wasn´t set free. This has all happened under the "patriot act". Do this "act" in any way relate to the american constitution? and does it inhibit the freedom of speach?
Misunderstand me right - I love the americans but som funny things seems to be going on over there.

Do some research on the Australian detained David Hicks, over 5 years no trial and a rotten coup by Bush himself.

What a mess, it's not about guilty/not guilty it's about the BS of not getting on with it.

The overwhelming weight of legal opinion believes the military commissions are flawed, partly because they allow hearsay evidence, including that obtained under duress and coercion of the accused and of witnesses.

The hearing was told the current charges against Mr Hicks have lapsed and the regulations governing the new military commissions will come into force in January.

Queensland Labor Senator John Hogg has questioned why a firm date cannot be given for new charges to be laid.

"Well, it's not very reassuring for Mr Hicks to be incarcerated and have no prospect as to when he might be charged under this new regime," Senator Hogg said.

"Surely the American authorities can be pressed to give some indication as to when charges might be laid."

A senior legal adviser with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Penny Richards, told the hearing US officials have been urged to lay new charges against Hicks as quickly as possible.

"The Government does remain very concerned about ongoing delay and has made numerous representations to the US about these concerns," Ms Richards said.

So after 5years let the charges lapse and bring up new ones, on 3 February 2007. lol

[ QUOTE ]
[/b]On February 3, 2007 the US military commission announced that it has prepared, but not yet laid, new charges against David Hicks.[/b] The drafted charges are attempted murder and providing material support for terrorism under the Military Commissions Act of 2006[51][52]. Each offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The prosecutors have said they will argue for goal term of 20 years, with an absolute minimum of 15 years to be served.[53] The sentence, which is not required to take into account time already served[54], is ultimately up to a jury of US military officers

America's freedom of speach is clear, your free to say what we let you. lol

Yep. And besides, he's the decider.

I'm getting out of here before I get started... Oy!

Hey, we're very busy over here finding out where they're going to bury Anna Nicole Smith and if Britney Spears is going to remain in rehab this time...her fourth in three weeks. A whole ten minutes of our national morning news was spent today on it, instead of Osama Bin Laden who Bush is going to get..dead or alive.

Things like war and torture are icky but know we support our troops (as long as they don't come home wounded and start asking for money). Iraq is a noble cause, we're winning there against terror and we're safer now, more so later when we nuke Iran and any nation not with us.

We have the best foreign-made American cars, kids in our schools are prescribed safe drugs so they can learn about Britney Spears without thinking about injustice or wars, and WalMart is the best place for cheap crap. Who needs a lawyer and rights? Even an arrest charge is a luxury no one deserves, and we kill babies in bathtubs if God tells us to, and Bishops are entitled to rape little boys as long as they don't tell for seven years.

We're number one, suck it up.

Now Hicks they grabbed in 2001

Then held him for 5 years invented new laws and waited out the 5 year cool off period to charge him under new laws brought up in 2006.

Ya got to hand it to the Yanks, hold em to ya make a law to get them good and proper ... PM Howard said this.

[ QUOTE ]
Mr Howard repeated this yesterday, saying "we do not believe the passage of retrospective criminal law in this country is appropriate".

But he said "once somebody goes overseas they lose the protection of Australian law".

[/ QUOTE ]

And the leader of the opposition said this ...

[ QUOTE ]
The Labor leader, Kevin Rudd, said: "I have never been a defender of Mr Hicks; I have been a consistent defender of Mr Hicks's legal rights and his human rights, and this US military commission is itself a travesty of justice."

I'm sure they're conjuring up the anti USA act, posts like this will land you in hot water. lol How that idiot remains in office is a joke in itself.

Oh yeah, where's Osama?

I think that is a big part of what what is going on over here. The Media is owned by one two or three companies, there is no new in the newspapers, even NPR is mostly fluff reporting, telivision oh my god. The internet is impossible to wade through what is real and what is not, a lot of opinions and ranting. Most of us over here have no clue what is going on. You have to really hunt for information. They have got us pretty much under control, subdued with cheap crap made in china.

Sorry Oakwilt but ignoring reality is what keeps humans sane.

Is this good or bad? We'll probably never know.

I think you are an idealist and an intelligent misanthropist, and this is how you make sense of the world.

Other people find that approach very difficult to come to terms with, they may find another way which may include suspension of disbelief, in order to live a quieter life.

That's indeed possible, but experience tells me that the one or two times catastrophy came my way, I was aware of it ahead of time. That was simply the process and action of being alert.

Some find escape in religion, some in drugs, others in narcisstic perception of themselves only. I'm a father, spouse, and realist...perhaps one reason the brood here is not just still alive, but prospering. It's maybe a curse that we stop and help others alongside the road at night, thwart that child molester from his victims, or offer experienced assistance in newly-dignosed cancer patients while other's might be enslaved to their own debts and ignore the crossing signals that keep trains and cars apart from each other. Not magic that Kharma instills a balance of good, it's just that the road it requires keeps one more in the light of good things occuring. A cheap whore will eventually succumb to the pathogens he/she works around daily. It's statistical reality.

Little gals who grew-up under the flash and excitement of Britney emulate the pattern, not much different than the real estate agent or attorney who feels a Hummer will advance his cause. Americans suffer from a delayed stress of realizing the course of their lives is determined more by Madison Avenue (advertising temptations) than the ethic of survival necessary by praticing cooperation and showing respect.

We feel better by hearing that Osama will be found dead or alive but the root of the problems are more along the pattern we live that make so many hateful (not jealous) of our addictions. In reality, Osama won and we lost.

1 - Some find escape in narcisstic perception of themselves .

2 - A cheap whore

3 - hearing that Osama will be found dead

[/ QUOTE ]

Point 1 - I think I suffer from this 21st century aliment.
I often feel like a selfish idiot. But I'm trying to change.

Point 2 - This is an extremely unhelpful way to label a fellow human being, and I am frankly dissapointed to see someone like you using language like this.

Point 3 - Osama Bin Laden was killed by French Special Forces, but this fact does not sit well with the anti-French Bush admin.

We all whore ourselves to a degree...how much is a personal decision.

The same could be said about slavery. Was it really ever "abolished?" Perhaps on the surface but the definition still fits insofar as stop-loss statistics, monopolistic district economies, political party affiliations and to some degree even companionships.

Self-serving interests may include drinking when thirsty, but to the man who finds locked doors when he's asking for help, it's more of a take what you give reality.

I don't think anyone here answered your questions. Oakwilt: Doooooood. What are you talking about?

I don't understand the "Patriot Act" that much. But, what I do appreciate about it is that is was a bipartisan decision to watch for Islamic fascists within the U.S. Who, by the way, want to plot and carry out more acts of violence against this country.

Is the Patriot Act right? Is it wrong? I'd like to think that the men and women who were voted (by the people) thought it out well enough to be used in a legal and humane manner. Does it seem that some folks with a suspicious last name are being treated unfairly? Probablly so. But, what kind of facts are disclosed to the public to make a well informed decision of the matter? Can the public fully understand a situation like the one you pointed out?

Like any country (or group of people) there are inconsistencies and double standards within. The U.S. is full of them. So, is any other country in the world.

But, what I don't like is treasonous talk against my country from within. (Yes this means you Oakwilt).--Seriously: what is wrong with you?
smirk.gif

The U.S. is a huge target. Geographically, politically, culturally, etc... It seems in the view of world, we cannot do anything right anymore. If we said 2+2=4. The world would laugh and say we had some kind of political or financial adjenda to what we said.

I leave with this one last comment: To all of you Euro's. Don't forget who bailed your arse out in WWII.

I'll get out of here now.

Notahacker, Europe was in ruins by the time the US came to the party, The US stood by with it's policy of isolationism until the japanese bombed Pearl harbour.

Of course the Europeans appreciated the sacrifice the Americans gave for them, if the US had not entered the war when they did Hitler would have possibly taken Britain, leading to a Nazi Europe, Dont trivialise millions of deaths with a cliched old statement.

Grover: where are you from?

Anyway, it may be a old statement, but is seems to be forgotten these days.--You have to admit it.

The forgotten message is this. If you give into a tyrant (i.e. Hitler) you will get run nover. In the same way, if you give into Islamafascism, you will get run nover. --That was my point behind the my statement. Thanks for bringing out the lack of communication on my part.

By no means was I entending to "trivialize millions of deaths."

Well I'm a little lost with the other posts but going back to Treebears point about professor Sami Al-Arian from Tampa Florida being Not Guilty yet held and my point about Hicks.

What I think, after consulting my political partner, is both these individuals have to be kept "mouths shut" and letting them out or giving them publicity will undermine the govt. In Hick's case he simply knows too much.

This is why they have military prosecutions not civil.

Lets face it, a man freely chooses to pick up arms and fight for another mob, gets caught, well why aint they treating him the same as any other soldier/rebel/guerilla etc they caught?

And yes, the media is way out of control, over here maybe 3 companies pretty much own all forms of media and telephone ... competitors are eaten alive.

Never have I seen such solidarity amongst big business and governement here as in the last 10 years, it is a grave concern.

Cheney's global.

Years ago a partnership with the U.S. was a productive and positive thing, now it's becoming deadly. Even Bush's lapdog Blair saw the writing on the wall and made some interesting choices the last few days.
