Forgetting something ?

Often I'm called out to look at some newly planted trees in the landscape. The customer asks why are all of my trees falling over? Sometimes the answers are as plain as day like when the twine (and wire) are left on the root ball when planting. Out of site out of mind until they blow over and the obvious is unearthed. Sad case scenario....

Landscapers can often be poor planters of trees!

So what is the consequence to the company who planted the tree? Are they held liable for replacement and loss of value to the landscape? Forcing a company to be held to task for doing below standard work will change things quickly.

Its hard to see this type of planting on so many young trees day after day. Very little accountablity, only a lot of clean up in the aftermath after such outrageous care...

"Disposable landscapes" Dr. Kevin Smith

After a period of time everyone involved is off the hook of responsibility....

It's standard practice, alongside the cheaply-built but expensive homes. Do anything, say anything in America now.

Think it's bad practice to leave the rootball intact? Try medicine lately?

I found this in a 15 inch concolor stump along with the rest of the basket. The tree was probably planted when it was 1.5"

That twine breaks down just fine, right?

good stuff sohner and zac, ive seen that a lot in stumps, never really knew what it was, its nice to know, now i can tell the homeowners exactly why there little trees keep dying off

Most of the newly planted trees around here look like telephone poles sticking up out of the ground. I think that they believe that if you plant the trees deeper you cant tell. That is until we air spade the trees and tell them that beyond the twine that is chokeing the tree it now has girdleing roots also. Have a nice day!

Owners often do the ostrich--by burying their heads in the earth, they stay blind to the decline of their trees due to...being buried, and strangled.

Attached is one such tale; this is such a common problem that ISA chose to send this piece to the Russian tree care magazine.
