FNG says \"hi\"

Hey all, first post here. Long story short is; I want to learn how to climb. I got the Tree Climbers Companion and also the Tree Climbing Basics DVD. I don't know anyone personally (whos local) that climbs,so, it's going to be lot of reading, knot practice, and trial and error (at a low height). Just something I've wanted to get into for a while, so now I'm finally making it happen. I'm also trying to create a fall-back plan if things ever go to hell at my current job. So thats that. I look forward to learning a lot here, and hope you all will tolerate all the "sigh---->forehead slap--->is this guy an idiot?" questions I will likely come up with.

Welcome!

You're in NJ? There are a few 'Buzzers in NJ. If you go to "User List' you ought to be able to sort by location. Or...look under the poster's avatar.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

Well welcome to the buzz. Glad you are interested in climbing, but I would like to suggest for you to find a recreational climbing course at a university in your area. It would give you all the basics while at the same time allowing you to be shown firsthand by knowledgeable people exactly how these basics are used in a controlled and safe setting. Skilled climbers will be able to point out your weaknessses and help you with them so you don't harm or injure yourself. With so many of these coarses offered in the States I would not suggest the trial and error route even at a low height, because you have better alternatives. Not advice, just a suggestion from my own personal experience. If I had been younger and had a choice I would have got professional training.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

I agree with DUDE, you will be way farther ahead in a short time and time is money. Along with being alot safer.
Welcome to the site.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

Thanks guys. Another person had suggested classes offered by a college one state over, but unfortunately I cannot commit to anything like that at this point in time. Between working long hours and a newborn, my free time is pretty limited. I can grab a few hours here and maybe half a day there. I understand I'm not going to be "good to go" by next week or anything, but eventually I'll get there. I tried to search around if there any climbing meets/jamborees or what-have-you here in the home state, but couldn't find much beyong the NJ tree climbing competition. And I'll def try to make the next one, why not right?

what about part time work with a reputable local tree service?

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought about that-
Problem is actually securing time to be there. I work second shift right now..and usually get home anywhere from 12a to 4a. Wake up, putz around for maybe a couple hours, right back out the door. Then one day "off"....then kid duty the next. I kinda doubt anyones going to have someone around one day out the week.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

There is a really good dude on here called Treehumper who is in Ridgefield NJ, I think. I am sure he would not mind meeting up at his convenience to share some of his knowledge. That might be a good starting point. Give him a PM and see what he suggests. I am sure he is a busy man but maybe he can spare a few hours sometime to help get someone started who is keen.

Welcome to the buzz Andrew

You know I'm good for some lessons if you're ever up this way.

Welcome to the Buzz.
Where in NJ are you located? I am about 75 miles north of NYC and do the commute most of the week. You are welcome to do some climbing with us if you are interested.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

What day off do you have? I think we could get you going if it's a Saturday or a Sunday. Toughest thing to do is get started on something but a journey of a thousand miles, etc...
For the record, I sub one day a week for a fellow buzzer. Give me a shout and we can figure out a time to connect. If you are committed to learning that is a huge plus in my books.

Thanks for the prop Swingdude!

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

I didn't think you could get any higher in my respect book, but you just went up another notch. That would have seemed an impossible feat until this. Nuff respect dude. Helping others is what makes this world a better place to live in.

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

Man...I was not expecting that. I really appreciate the responses.

Scrat- Where at exactly? I think you're about 3 hours away, maybe 2 1/2. Im in central Jersey.

Treehumper-Sending a PM your way!

Re: FNG says \"hi\"

Hopewell Junction in Dutchess county.
Figured if you were not far from the city I would possibly head out your way on the way home. You are more than welcome to to come north and climb if your schedule allows. Treehumper is giving you a great offer. If you are really interested in climbing it is a great opportunity to climb and you should see if you can even stop by jobs they are doing and just watch when you are short on time.

Most if not all of the guys I have met from the Buzz are stand up dudes who would help facilitate a new guy who was interested in learning the trade.
