Firefighers should know better...I'd think???

Re: Firefighers should know better...I\'d think???

Most depts around where I am including mine (volunteer) don't do any types of animal rescues. That lower guy sure was stretching it though! Not very professional of them with no PPE at all

Please dont lump all firefighters into the same catagories as these two intelegent fellas. Most of us are pretty smart. But hey they got themselves and their company on the front page I bet. Even though its dumb to us that is good publicity for them.

I paint with a narrow brush...not a roller.

Those two deserve grounding!

If I ever heard that the FD that my taxes paid for were out rescuing dogs, cats, RC planes etc. out of trees I'd have a word with the Chief! What happens if a 911 call comes in when they're out climbing trees?!?!?

Re: Firefighers should know better...I\'d think???

I'd like to know how far up they were.

Doesn't look far.

Re: Firefighers should know better...I\'d think???

Having 4 small dogs myself, ranging from Rat Terrier to a Longhair Chihuahua, I'm guessing that anywhere a dog could climb is rather safe territory for a free climb in a tree.

Bet the tree was safer, maybe even better than a ladder for holds.

....

The volunteer fd that I belong to is currently strugling with volunteers to ride the trucks, and bringing more money in than needs to be spent to keep up the operation (as many VFD are right now). Our company is not tax based and many people in our community actually think we are a paid Dept. We need every opportunity to get out into our community to educate the public about what we do and who we are, so rescuing pets and the such are excellent opportunities. Now safely is the key. In our area, at least, most of the volunteers have at least a 5 minute ride to the firehose. If we are out rescuing a cat, with a crew on the truck, our response time is actually cut in atleast half. FF's are trained to adapt to conditions around them and many times this means changing directions, plans, or approaches in an instant. If we cant change from pet rescue mode to emergency mode, as soon as that pager goes off, we are in the wrong business. We wake up from a sound sleep at 2am quite regularly to assist those in need. And you have to be on your A game when that truck roles out the door or it could be you that is not coming home. I think we can change gear while wide awake.

All I ask is that before you go off on your local FD or fire chief please make sure you know why, how, and who your local FD is. They might need to be doing this, for recruitment, donations, or just public education.

Tom that's exactly why our dept and surrounding depts don't do it. Especially if we are sending our million dollar tower truck out to to something like that. Also like you said what if a structure fire comes in or a heart attack call. Takes a few minutes to pack the truck back up and minutes count in emergencies.

Never heard that one before! Many people don't realize though, here in ontario 70% of the firefighters are volunteers. Only in larger cities do you have fulltime depts. like the previous poster said it takes about 5 minutes before our trucks actually roll out of the firehall. Those guys might not of been up high, it's just the same as falling off a ladder, doesn't take much to break a bone or 2, land the wrong way and become paralyzed.

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

Thus began the 911 call.
