"Feeling safe is dangerous"

Re: \"Feeling safe is dangerous\"

Fantastic Tom!

Due to certain situations elsewhere; i have been in fact thinking of making a Flash page of Ehrman's Desidarata that i thought was in every kid's home. But, perhaps more so from the author's home state of (Terre Haute/ ISU) Indiana.

Just as so i thought Rudyard Kipling's ("Jungle Book", "Man who would be King" "If" from "Rewards and Faeries"; hung on a scrolled plaque on every young knight's wall, that wished to know, what it took to become a man.

As to the title of your thread, my mantra/line has been:
"Let knowledge replace Fear; but maintain yo'Respect"
Learn your lessons and how to command these things, but never stop standing guard, never grow complacent. A while back during the "No Fear" craze, i tried to whimsically start a "Know Fear" one on climbing. With a carabiner in center of the "Know Fear"; that some school picked up.

Re: \"Feeling safe is dangerous\"

I consider me >embrace the consequences< climber if i read it correct. Is that good or bad? Just today i was starting climbing a leaning willow (40 degree angle, measured :) with tops hanging against/in some lork. Didnt feel good to get it down by climbing and rigging so i left it for a self propelled caterpillar bucket to do next week. Good thing is that there's also a big poplar with BAD falsch crotch that needs a takedown. not climable as its crotch is opened and in decay. could strap the tops together but no dropzone or redirect rigging possible.

Thanks for the poem link. I didn't know those lines were from Kipling. Especially like...

"If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

But my favorite...

"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same"
