Fatal accident 2/20/2022 in Brown Deer Wisconsin

At times visual and physical I prefer ladders difficult for people to move or step over. Here it is federal offense to disrupt a work site so I have been told. Pulling a tree of the front entrance of an elementary school at lunch time is nuts. Mailman was the only one to try get through.

Tragic for the family and climber. I hope the climber and family have access to quality mental health care.

Working in downtown Seattle doing ground control on a reduction job of a dozen trees along a Block. Caution tape and cones on both sides. Got a bit complacent after a few hours cause everyone was just walking around to the other side. About mid day I had an incensed wheelchair user rip the caution Tape strung across the sidewalk and motor right under the DZ, and rip the tape on the other side of the block. I was luckily able to shout to the climbers one of whom was just starting a handsaw cut. Not huge stuff coming down but definitely enough to kill someone without A helmet.

Even fully Surrounding The DZ with CAUTION tape is no guarentee.
Can't fix stupid. People have a total disregard for their own safety. They think it is somebody elses problem to worry about.

This is a perfect example of why we need to be careful about who walks onto the jobsite. All too often homeowners want "to watch." We tell them they can from somewhere way over there.

This is why you don't allow spectators. Or if you do they need to be far away. Of course they will still walk by you to go back in the house or something else and not make eye contact first.

It is enough to keep track of your guys on the ground nevermind a rubbernecker. When someone gets close we alert eachother on our headsets and stop immediately.

True story I had caution tape and cones up at a park and some woman lifted the tape and walked through the middle of the jobsite. My groundie who was in the bucket truck about to pull over the log I was felling suddenly went bullshit yelling for me to stop. This moron walked under the bull rope that was about to pull the tree I kid you not. She continued on checking her phone not a care in the world. Honestly there should be a law not allowing people to sue due to stupidity.

Same setup…cones…tape etc

Pedestrian walks up, texting, pulls up tape and walks into our work zone. Crew leader on loader screams at him, Stop! What are you doing?! The guy looks up, hasn’t missed a step, and indignantly says:

I’m a Millennial!

Stunning reply

Crew leader Bellars more and three guy, who is miffed, walks out of the work zone

The work was in a busy park so after that a groundie was posted as a guard

I've seen the same thing a few times during a tree championship. One was on a bicycle and raised the caution tape to the workclimb while everyone was in there and the event was live.

I had a physicist do the same on our jobsite at a plasma physics lab. He just never went in through any other door he said :D

For the sake of discussion: I wonder though in this day and age of lawyering if using the word “target” would be unwise (if there were an incident). I also wonder if the language “caution” on tape could have legal implications vs. “keep out” on a worksite?
I know of an incident where a company did a thorough work zone plan and cordoned off the area with caution tape. Elderly homeowner and care giver were communicated with and not going to exit the house. Climber called for all clear to ground crew who looked and cleared the area. Climber cut top out and the Elderly man came home walking through the tape and was killed. Courts found company at fault due to it stating caution instead of t do not enter.
